Chase posts OCU-record 36 digs

Senior from Yukon, Okla., snags 13th 30-dig performance for Stars

BELLEVUE, Neb. – Dani Chase set Oklahoma City University's dig record as Midland (Neb.) edged Oklahoma City University 25-22, 20-25, 25-27, 25-10, 15-11 on Friday at the Lied Center in the Bellevue Labor Day Classic.
Chase, a senior from Yukon, Okla., accumulated 36 digs vs. Midland to establish OCU's single-match record. The Stars fell 25-22, 25-17, 25-19 to Grand View (Iowa) on Friday afternoon. OCU went to 1-4 with each of the Stars' losses coming to top 10-ranked teams in NAIA volleyball.
Oklahoma City has taken on top-ranked Hastings (Neb.), fourth-ranked Midland, eighth-ranked Columbia (Mo.) and 10th-ranked Grand View this season.
Against Midland, Chase topped the Stars' past mark of 34 held by Meghann Turner and Shelbey Veselka. Veselka reached 34 digs twice, most recently Oct. 14, 2008 at Southern Nazarene.
Chase became the first Star since Kelley Shiels amassed 31 on Sept. 6, 2014 against Evangel (Mo.) to scoop up 30 digs. Chase had the 13th 30-dig performance in OCU history and surpassed her previous career high of 29 digs, which came Oct. 24, 2015 at Wayland Baptist (Texas).
Marijana Bjelobrk landed a kill that gave Oklahoma City a 4-1 fifth-set lead. Midland responded with a 7-0 run to get a 9-5 advantage to propel the Lady Warriors to victory.
OCU built a 2-1 advantage through three sets. The Stars rallied to take a 21-20 edge as Stefani Nell smacked back-to-back kills to punctuate a 6-0 Oklahoma City run. Nell posted a pair of kills to provide the Stars set point at 24-22.
Midland scored the next three points, but OCU secured the set with three consecutive points. Jazmyn Boyd-Clark and Sanja Vojnovic teamed on a block, then Vojnovic's ace put the Stars ahead 26-25.
Vojnovic, a senior from Bajeljena, Bosnia, totaled 36 assists and three aces, and Nell, a senior from Tulsa, Okla., produced 18 kills, 15 digs and two aces. Bjelobrk, a sophomore from Belgrade, Serbia, posted 10 kills, four digs and four blocks, while Holly Randall contributed nine kills and three blocks for OCU.
Against Grand View, Nell turned in 11 kills and 10 digs.
Vojnovic rang up 27 assists, and Chase picked up 19 digs. Randall, a senior from Edmond, Okla., added eight kills and two blocks, while Lacy Beeler chipped in seven kills.
Oklahoma City faces Baker (Kan.) at 9 a.m. Saturday in Bellevue, Neb.
