OCU takes setbacks in Marshall Classic

Stars test themselves vs. top 10-ranked competition

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. – Oklahoma City University fell short against top-ranked defending national champion Hastings (Neb.) 26-28, 25-19, 25-18, 25-21 at the Heartland Events Center on Friday in the Bill Marshall Classic.
The Stars went to 0-2 after dropping a 21-25, 25-19, 25-23, 26-24 decision to Columbia (Mo.), ranked eighth in NAIA volleyball.
Against Hastings, Marijana Bjelobrk and Stefani Nell paced OCU with 12 kills each. Bjelobrk, a sophomore from Belgrade, Serbia, picked up seven digs, while Nell, a senior from Tulsa, Okla., snagged nine digs.
Lacy Beeler, a freshman from Jenks, Okla., posted 10 kills, and Dani Chase, a senior from Yukon, Okla., tracked down 18 digs for Oklahoma City. Sanja Vojnovic, a senior from Bajeljena, Bosnia, rang up 37 assists and nine digs, and Holly Randall, a senior from Edmond, Okla., chipped in seven kills.
Beeler, Bjelobrk and Jazmyn Boyd-Clark collected kills to put OCU ahead 4-0 early in the match. The Stars tallied four consecutive points to get to set point at 24-21.
Nell hammered a pair of kills to help Oklahoma City close out the first set with three points in a row.
Against Columbia, Bjelobrk supplied the Stars with 14 kills and two blocks, and Beeler added 13 kills, four digs and three blocks.
Vojnovic produced 43 assists, four kills, four digs and four aces, while Nell contributed seven kills and eight digs for OCU. Randall smacked seven kills, and Chase picked up a team-best 14 digs. Clark, a junior from Troutdale, Ore., led the Stars with four blocks.
Beeler's kill provided Oklahoma City with set point at 24-21 in the first set. Lindsey Grace served up the ace that clinched the set.
OCU faces Coastal Georgia at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Marshall Classic.
