OCU knocks off Bacone 74-67

Stars win third in a row

MUSKOGEE, Okla. – Oklahoma City University's Lou Dunbar went for a season-high 22 points and helped carry the Stars to a 74-67 victory over Bacone on Saturday at the Palmer Center.
Oklahoma City, ranked 23rd in NAIA Division I men's basketball, went to 9-2 overall and 3-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference play while Bacone fell to 2-7 on the year and 0-3 in the SAC. Dunbar, a senior from Seabrook, Texas, tallied 14 of his 22 points in the first half of Saturday's contest, his first game reaching double-figures in scoring this year.
"I was proud of coming up with the win and taking three out of four in league play on the road," OCU head coach Vinay Patel said. "I'll take that start any day. I'm really proud of this basketball team for figuring out how to win a very sloppy game tonight."
Bacone jumped out to an 11-6 lead five minutes into the game, hitting shots from beyond the arc and keeping the OCU offense at bay. The Stars battled back as the first half wore on, at one point holding a four-point lead. Neither team was able to create any separation however, as the game produced four ties and eight lead changes in the first 20 minutes.
Oklahoma City shot 36.7 percent from the field and 35.7 percent from 3-point range at the break, while the Warriors finished the half shooting 42.1 percent from the field and 41.7 percent from deep. Samuel Williams, a senior from Reno, Nev., added eight first-half points for the Stars and finished the night with 18 points and seven boards.
OCU found its offensive rhythm in the second half and exploded on a 13-3 run to take control. The Stars built a 14-point lead minutes after and didn't look back from there. Bacone fought and clawed its way back into the game, cutting the deficit to six with under a minute to go, but it was too little, too late for the Warriors.
"I was really proud of the team for the week of practice we had during finals," Patel said. "They put together four good practices in a row so as far as the outcome of the game I'm excited about that but I was disappointed in some of the things we did execution wise tonight."
Ivan Saicic and Terence Bonhomme each notched seven points in the win. Saicic added nine rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block against Bacone, while Bonhomme added three assists, two boards and a steal. Oklahoma City outscored the Warriors 56-42 in the paint and turned 20 Bacone turnovers into 25 points.
The Stars are off for the next two weeks and play next against Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) at 7:45 p.m. Jan. 4 at Abe Lemons Arena.
