Stars fall to Texas A&M Commerce 82-66 in exhibition

OCU returns to action Nov. 29 against Randall

COMMERCE, Texas – Oklahoma City University ended its two-game exhibition slate with an 82-66 loss to NCAA Division II Texas A&M Commerce Tuesday night at the A&M Commerce Field House.
OCU, ranked 12th in the NAIA Division I men's basketball preseason poll, hung tough with the Lions for the majority of the night, but allowed Texas A&M Commerce to end the game on a 12-2 run over the last three and a half minutes. Terence Bonhomme, a senior from St. Martinville, La., led the Stars with 17 points, six rebounds and four assists.
"I am proud of the effort our guys showed tonight," OCU head coach Vinay Patel said. "We played a little short handed, but we had some guys step up, especially in the first half. They did a great job defending us and disrupting our offense all night. We rebounded the ball much better tonight and it looks like our defense is starting to take some steps in the right direction."
Oklahoma City jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the early minutes of Tuesday's contest, getting a dunk and layup from senior guard Walter Rickett. Ricket, the only other Star to score in double figures on Tuesday, had 10 of his 12 points in the first half.
The Stars held a lead for three and a half minutes in the first half, and kept the score tied at 39 heading into the break. While OCU went cold from behind the arc (2-of-11), it made up for the drought by scoring 26 points in the paint and shooting 56.3 from the field after the game's first 20 minutes.
Texas A&M Commerce built a seven-point lead four minutes into the second half, and never looked back. The Lions scored 24 points off 20 OCU turnovers and hit 16 layups in the second half, at one point stretching their lead to 17 with 33 seconds left.
Samuel Williams, a senior from Reno, Nev., played just 17 minutes due to foul trouble and finished with just six points and five rebounds before fouling out with just under two and a half minutes to go. Williams led the Stars with 16 points, six rebounds and two assists in their last exhibition against Midwestern State (Texas).
OCU finished the game shooting 55 percent from the field and forced the Lions into 17 turnovers. Both teams ended with 26 total rebounds, but the Stars pulled down nine offensive rebounds while Texas A&M Commerce had eight.
"We are hitting a very critical point in our season and have a big road test against Randall coming up before we open conference play," Patel said. "We are hoping to get a few things cleaned up and do a better job of executing on both ends before we play our next game."
Oklahoma City (6-0) returns to action at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 29 against Randall in Moore, Okla.
