Stars collect SAC volleyball tournament title

NAIA Championship Opening Round pairings to be announced 10 a.m. Monday

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University took its second consecutive Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball tournament championship 25-13, 25-21, 25-19 over Texas Wesleyan on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars (23-6) swept the SAC regular-season and tournament crowns for the second year in a row. Oklahoma City captured its third conference tournament title and owns SAC Tournament championships won in 2010, 2016 and 2017.
OCU qualified for the NAIA Championships for the third time in program history as the SAC regular-season champion. The NAIA Championship Opening Round takes place Nov. 18 at various campus sites across the nation. The NAIA will announce the national-tournament field and pairings 10 a.m. CST Monday on its Facebook page, Facebook.com/PlayNAIA, via Facebook Live.
Texas Wesleyan (26-4) secured the SAC's other national-tournament berth. Texas Wesleyan will make its ninth national-tournament appearance and first since 2005.
Sanja Vojnovic of the Stars collected the SAC Tournament most valuable player award. Vojnovic, a senior from Bijeljina, Bosnia, provided Oklahoma City with 32 assists, four aces and two digs Saturday. Vojnovic averaged 11.00 assists, 0.89 aces and 0.44 blocks per set during the tournament.
"The team played great volleyball this week," OCU coach Jason Muñoz said. "It was great to be at home, and we are looking forward to the Opening Round next week."
OCU's Marijana Bjelobrk, a sophomore from Belgrade, Serbia, also became an all-tournament selection. Bjelobrk posted nine kills, two blocks and two digs in the championship match. In the tournament, Bjelobrk notched 3.67 kills and 0.56 blocks a set.
Stefani Nell, a senior from Tulsa, Okla., turned in nine kills and eight digs, while Holly Randall, a senior from Edmond, Okla., added eight kills and four blocks for the Stars. Dani Chase, a senior from Yukon, Okla., contributed 19 digs and four aces, and Kenzie McMullen, a senior from Edmond, Okla., picked up seven digs and an ace for OCU.
OCU's Caitlin Chamness, a senior from Littleton, Colo., landed three aces. Lacy Beeler and Jazmyn Boyd-Clark each nailed five kills for the Stars.
Sasha Robinson and Shelby Stinnett made the all-tournament team for Texas Wesleyan. Kayla Hayes led Texas Wesleyan with 11 digs.
Chase served up three aces in a row to put Oklahoma City up 19-7 in the first set. The Stars responded with the final four points of the second set after Texas Wesleyan tied the score 21-21. Beeler and Bjelobrk each smacked kills, while Chamness had two aces.
OCU built a 6-1 third-set lead en route to clinching the win. Vojnovic produced two aces, then Beeler and Clark each hammered kills.
