SAN ANTONIO – Oklahoma City University's season drew to a close in a 27-25, 25-22, 25-22 loss to Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) on Saturday at the Mabee Gymnasium in the NAIA Volleyball Championship Opening Round.
Stefani Nell, a senior from Tulsa, Okla., supplied the Stars with nine kills and seven digs. OCU concluded its season 23-7.
Oklahoma City advanced to the national tournament after sweeping the Sooner Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament championships for the second year in a row. OCU competed in the national tournament for the third time in program history while posting its fourth 20-win season in a row.
Red River Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament champ Our Lady of the Lake (24-8) reached the NAIA Championships on Nov. 28-Dec. 2 in Sioux City, Iowa. The 12 victorious teams from the NAIA Championship Opening Round join the top 19 seeds and championship host Morningside (Iowa) in pool play the first three days.
Sanja Vojnovic, a senior from Bijeljina, Bosnia, collected 30 assists, 10 digs and five kills, and Dani Chase, a senior from Yukon, Okla., tracked down 20 digs for the Stars.
OCU's Holly Randall, a senior from Edmond, Okla., produced eight kills and a team-best five blocks, while Lacy Beeler, a freshman from Jenks, Okla., and Jazmyn Boyd-Clark, a junior from Troutdale, Ore., chipped in eight kills and three blocks each. Kenzie McMullen, a senior from Edmond, Okla., picked up nine digs.
The Stars extended the first set after Our Lady of the Lake reached set point at 24-22. Marijana Bjelobrk and Beeler knocked down kills to tie the set. Randall hammered a kill to even the set 25-25, but Natalie Fazio and Raven Swain answered with kills for the Saints.
Our Lady of the Lake built 7-2 and 17-10 third-set advantages, but OCU climbed back into the set. Beeler teamed with Randall on a block, then nailed back-to-back kills to cut Our Lady of the Lake's lead to 18-14. Clark added kills and combined with Bjelobrk on a block to tie the set 22-22. The Saints clinched the victory with Swain's kill and Anissa Tamez's ace.
