WAXAHACHIE, Texas – Oklahoma City University toppled Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) 25-23, 21-25, 25-13, 25-21 on Friday night at the Schaeffer Center.
The Stars handed Southwestern Assemblies of God its first Sooner Athletic Conference loss of the year. OCU improved to 11-5, 7-1 in the SAC, while Southwestern Assemblies fell to 16-5, 7-1 in SAC volleyball.
OCU, Southwestern Assemblies of God and Texas Wesleyan sit atop the conference standings at 7-1 after Friday's results. Oklahoma City takes on Texas Wesleyan at 1 p.m. Saturday in Fort Worth, Texas. Southwestern Assemblies of God dropped only two sets during its first seven league matches of the season.
"The team played well tonight," OCU coach Jason Muñoz said. "SAGU is a very good team, and it was great to get a tough win on the road."
Marijana Bjelobrk, a sophomore from Belgrade, Serbia, stood front and center for OCU with 14 kills and two blocks. Stefani Nell, a senior from Tulsa, Okla., added 10 kills, 12 digs and two blocks, while Jazmyn Boyd-Clark, a junior from Troutdale, Ore., posted 10 kills and five blocks for the Stars.
OCU's Sanja Vojnovic, a senior from Bajeljena, Bosnia, turned in her fourth double-double of the season and second in a row with 42 assists, 13 digs and two aces, and Holly Randall, a senior from Edmond, Okla., chipped in eight kills and three blocks. Dani Chase, a senior from Yukon, Okla., provided the Stars with 12 digs, while Lacy Beeler, a freshman from Jenks, Okla., picked up seven kills and three blocks.
In the first set, Clark and Bjelobrk smacked the kills that clinched the set and broke a 23-23 tie. Bjelobrk knocked down a kill that put OCU ahead 10-3 on the way to winning the third set.
In the fourth set, Nell hammered a couple of kills to give the Stars a 19-14 lead that helped OCU salt away the win.
