OCU goes 1-2 in NWCA National Duals

Stars move to 3-2 against ranked opponents in 2016-17

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Oklahoma City University bowed out of the NWCA National Duals after dropping a 24-14 decision to Cumberland (Tenn.) on Thursday at the Fort Wayne Convention Center.
The Stars fell into the elimination bracket after a 24-19 setback to Baker (Kan.) on Thursday morning, then defeated Doane (Neb.) 32-11 on Thursday night. Oklahoma City, ranked sixth in NAIA wrestling, went to 11-4 on the season.
Against 17th-ranked Cumberland, OCU dropped to 3-2 against top-25 foes this season. Ricky McCarty's 11-2 triumph over Orlando Nawade highlighted the Stars' effort. McCarty, the third-ranked 174-pounder in the NAIA, topped Nawade, 11th in those ratings. His win sliced the Stars' hole to 15-11.
Gavin Millhouse picked up a 9-7 win over Evan Cole in the 149-pound match to reduce Cumberland's lead to 9-7. Mason Naifeh contributed a 19-7 win over Sean Nguyen for OCU in the 125-pound bout.
Korey Walker finished the dual with a 5-3 win over Jon Floyd in the first sudden-victory period for the Stars.
Against Baker, the Stars' rally fell short as David Dow's 5-2 victory over Walker in the heavyweight match clinched the verdict. Evan Hudson edged William Leone 8-6 in the 197-pound bout to cut OCU's deficit to 21-19.
Hudson's win capped the Stars' run of four victories in a row. Brok Williams knocked off Joshua Ortiz at 165, while McCarty, a senior from Lawton, Okla., prevailed 5-1 over Nick Moore at 174 for OCU. Derek Sivertsen pinned Jacob Smith in 6:49.
Baker took a 21-3 lead in the dual after Jonathan Blackwell nipped Kristian Holguin-Mendez 10-9 in the 157-pound contest.
Against Doane, the Stars erased an 11-4 deficit by winning the final seven matches. Eric Ambriz and Sivertsen picked up falls for Oklahoma City.
OCU meets Central Oklahoma at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Edmond, Okla.
