Stars look to keep pace in Sooner Athletic Conference race

THE MATCHUP:
Oklahoma City University faces another Sooner Athletic Conference road test at Texas Wesleyan.
 
ABOUT THE STARS: The Stars routed St. Gregory's 106-41 on Thursday night at Abe Lemons Arena. Oklahoma City (15-2, 6-1 SAC) had season bests in points and margin of victory (65).
Daniela Galindo, a 5-foot-10 junior from Shattuck, Okla., tallied a season-high 25 points and swiped five steals in 16 minutes of play. She hit 11 of her 13 shots from the field and all three of her 3-point tries. Galindo supplies the Stars 16.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.47 steals a contest and a 43.2 percent 3-point shooting percentage.
Daniela Wallen, a 5-11 senior from Caracas, Venezuela, accumulated 24 points, four rebounds and four steals. Wallen amasses 24.4 points, 9.4 rebounds and 3.82 steals per game. She leads the NAIA with 65 steals and is the NAIA's second-leading scorer. Allison Frey, a 5-9 junior from Mustang, Okla., had season highs with 21 points and six rebounds. Frey averages 4.9 points and 1.2 rebounds a game with a 90.9 percent free-throw percentage.
OCU tops the NAIA with a 50.1 percent field-goal percentage and an 80.1 percent free-throw percentage. To see where the Stars rank statistically among NAIA Division I, click here.
The Stars moved to seventh in the last top 25. OCU extended its streak of top-25 showings to 207 consecutive polls since 1999-2000. OCU owns national championships from 1988, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2012, 2014 and 2015. SAC coaches installed the Stars as the league's preseason favorite. OCU has won or shared the SAC regular-season crown 16 times.
Oklahoma City leads the all-time series against Texas Wesleyan 10-0. The Stars came away with a 53-46 win Feb. 25, 2016 in Fort Worth, Texas, in the most recent meeting. Wallen reeled in 21 points and 10 rebounds.
 
ABOUT THE LADY RAMS: Wayland Baptist (Texas) held off Texas Wesleyan 70-65 on Thursday in Plainview, Texas. Texas Wesleyan (11-6, 4-3 SAC) dropped to 0-2 this season vs. ranked opponents.
Bailey Broadnax, a 6-foot freshman, propelled her team with 16 points, seven rebounds and two assists. Broadnax collects 11.4 points and 8.3 rebounds a game. Ashlie Bruner, a 5-4 junior, had 15 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Bruner averages 12.4 points, 6.1 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 2.59 steals per game.
Texas Wesleyan's 30.3 defensive rebounds a game rank ninth among the NAIA. SAC coaches predicted Texas Wesleyan would finish fifth in the league race before the season.
 
ABOUT THE COACHES: Bo Overton returns to OCU for his second season as its head coach. Overton has coaching experience on the professional level in China, Russia and the WNBA, as well as college head-coaching experience with Missouri-Kansas City. Overton has been an assistant on the international level for the Bahamas and China, including the 2012 Olympics with the Chinese team. Overton is well known among Oklahomans for his stint as an assistant to Sherri Coale at Oklahoma from 1998-2004 as well as playing college basketball at Oklahoma.
Bill Franey has a 96-76 record in his sixth season as the Lady Rams' head coach. Among many notables in his career, Franey guided Belleville St. Henry Prep (Ill.) to a state championship and served as an assistant coach to Nolan Richardson at the University of Tulsa in the early 1980s.
