Stars slide past Southwestern Christian 85-84

Fifth-ranked OCU remains unbeaten at Abe Lemons Arena this season

OKLAHOMA CITY – Syrus McDonald sank a free throw with 2.6 seconds remaining to bring Oklahoma City University an 85-84 victory over Southwestern Christian on Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Tyler Alderman topped the Stars with 17 points. Oklahoma City, ranked fifth in NAIA Division I men's basketball, went to 13-2, 4-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Brandon Patten fired in a 3-pointer with 41 seconds to go to provide OCU an 84-82 edge. Marvin White answered with a jumper with 30 seconds showing to tie the game 84-84 for Southwestern Christian.
"Any win in this league is a good win," OCU coach Vinay Patel said. "Give some credit to these guys for stepping up big when they needed to down the stretch. We got a key stop when we needed to down the stretch, and Brandon Patten hit a huge shot with seconds to go."
The Stars rallied from a 12-point deficit early in the second half. White's lay-in put the Eagles up 53-41 with 18:03 left. Xavier Smith hit a trey that ignited an 8-0 OCU run that cut Southwestern Christian's lead to 55-51.
Smith's putback tied the score 67-67, then McDonald scored on a transition bucket to put the Stars in front 69-67 at the 8:07 mark. The lead changed hands six times the rest of the contest.
Alderman, a senior from Fishers, Ind., posted his third double-double of the season, grabbing 10 rebounds and sinking 7 of 8 shots from the field. Smith, a senior from Richardson, Texas, produced 16 points, 11 rebounds and two blocked shots.
McDonald, a senior from Flint, Mich., delivered 15 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals, while Patten, a junior from Orange Park, Fla., collected 15 points and six rebounds on 5-of-6 shooting from the field for the Stars. Jonathan Reed, a junior from Powder Springs, Ga., collected 10 points, six rebounds and four assists for OCU.
"Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday is the most I've seen kids in our gym on their own time getting shots up," Patel said. "It's the hardest I've seen our team work on their own. That's why I think you see some of these guys' stats. They're working at it, and it's paying off."
The Stars built an early 18-8 advantage on Patten's jumper in the lane.
OCU is set to play Wayland Baptist (Texas) at 3 p.m. Saturday in Plainview, Texas.
