Stars absorb 35-12 loss to Central Oklahoma

Mendez, Sivertsen and Walker win for OCU

EDMOND, Okla. – Kristian Holguin-Mendez's fall at 165 pounds highlighted Oklahoma City University's effort in a 35-12 loss to Central Oklahoma on Wednesday at Hamilton Field House.
Derek Sivertsen and Korey Walker accounted for the Stars' other victories during the dual. Oklahoma City, ranked sixth in NAIA wrestling, dropped to 11-5 in duals.
Central Oklahoma, ranked eighth in NCAA Division II, moved to 9-0 this season. Central Oklahoma kept intact its winning streak, notching its 16th consecutive dual win.
Mendez, a junior from Sapulpa, Okla., pinned Danny Carrillo in 3:39 for OCU's first victory of the night. Mendez (16-7) stands eighth in the NAIA 165-pound ratings.
Sivertsen earned an escape then a takedown early in the third period on the way to a 6-1 win over Caleb Hawes at 184. Sivertsen, a senior from Moore, Okla., also had a takedown late in the second period plus riding time. Sivertsen (7-4) holds the sixth spot in the NAIA rankings at his weight.
Walker came up with an escape with nearly a minute left to win the 285-pound match over Kyle Factor. Walker, a sophomore from Midwest City, Okla., took Factor down in the first period, then Factor tied the match 2-2 early in the third. Walker (23-4) is the third-ranked heavyweight in the NAIA.
Central Oklahoma's Miguel Barreras edged Ricky McCarty 6-4 in the 174-pound bout. McCarty tied the score 4-4 with an escape and takedown in the third period. Barreras picked up an escape and riding time to close out the win.
Greg Wilson needed a third-period escape to beat the Stars' Evan Hudson 3-2. Wilson is ranked seventh at 197 pounds in NCAA Division II.
The Stars compete in the Missouri Valley Invitational on Jan. 15-16 in Marshall, Mo.
