Stars pound St. Gregory's

OCU climbs rankings into its best rating ever

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University held off St. Gregory's 25-14, 25-19, 25-12 for its first Sooner Athletic Conference victory of the season Wednesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Manon Soraru, a junior from Mulhouse, France, topped OCU with 11 kills and three aces. The Stars, ranked 18th in NAIA volleyball, improved to 7-2, 1-0 in the SAC.
The Stars moved up to 18th in the last top 25 for its highest ranking ever in volleyball. Oklahoma City surpassed the No. 23 spot it occupied last year.
Sanja Vojnovic, a junior from Bajeljena, Bosnia, rang up 34 assists, five kills and two aces for OCU. Fia Faa'agi, a sophomore from Murrieta, Calif., posted nine kills and four digs, while Dani Chase, a junior from Yukon, Okla., tracked down 13 digs for the Stars.
In the first set, OCU overcame St. Gregory's 6-3 lead with an 11-0 run. Soraru sparked the splurge with a kill and back-to-back aces. Vojnovic handed OCU a 14-6 advantage using consecutive kills.
The Stars erased St. Gregory's 16-12 second-set advantage with six unanswered points. Soraru nailed a pair of kills, while Faa'agi contributed three kills.
OCU pounced on St. Gregory's in the third set. Faa'agi and Vojnovic socked consecutive kills to put the Stars on top 11-2.
The Stars face USAO at 5 p.m. Thursday in Chickasha, Okla.
