Stars edge Montana Tech

OCU finishes Bellevue Labor Day Classic at 3-1

BELLEVUE, Neb. – Oklahoma City University pulled out a 25-22, 18-25, 17-25, 25-19, 20-18 win over Montana Tech on Saturday evening at the Lied Center in the Bellevue Labor Day Classic.
The Stars also defeated Davenport (Mich.) 25-22, 25-21, 26-24 earlier Saturday. OCU moved to 6-2 in volleyball this season.
Manon Soraru and Fia Faa'agi supplied OCU with the winning kills in the fifth and final set against Montana Tech. The Stars erased a 13-11 deficit as Marijana Bjelobrk and Holly Randall teamed on consecutive blocks. Randall smacked a kill that set OCU up with match point at 14-13.
Stefani Nell, a junior from Tulsa, Okla., spearheaded the Stars with 21 kills and 13 digs, while Sanja Vojnovic, a junior from Bajeljena, Bosnia, piled up 47 assists and nine digs.
The Stars' Dani Chase, a junior from Yukon, Okla., led OCU with 18 digs, and Shekinah Clarke, a sophomore from Waianae, Hawaii, scooped up 15 digs. Soraru, a junior from Mulhouse, France, added 11 kills and two blocks, and Faa'agi, a sophomore from Murrieta, Calif., notched 10 kills, eight digs and three blocks.
Against Davenport, Soraru rang up 17 kills, and Faa'agi chipped in 12 kills. Chase had 16 digs, while Vojnovic recorded 45 assists.
OCU opens Sooner Athletic Conference play 7 p.m. Wednesday against St. Gregory's at Abe Lemons Arena.
