OCU upends fifth-ranked Hastings in five sets

Stars take second victory over rated foe in top five

BELLEVUE, Neb. – Oklahoma City University toppled Hastings (Neb.) 19-25, 25-18, 18-25, 25-12, 15-12 on Friday at the Lied Activity Center in the Bellevue Labor Day Classic.
The Stars posted their second victory ever over top five-ranked competition in upending Hastings, ranked fifth in NAIA volleyball. OCU (4-2) fell to sixth-ranked Midland (Neb.) 13-25, 25-10, 25-23, 25-19 earlier Friday.
OCU's other win over a top-five opponent came over fourth-ranked Columbia (Mo.) 18-25, 25-20, 25-23, 13-25, 16-14 on Oct. 17, 2009 in the Lindenwood Classic at St. Charles, Mo.
Manon Soraru fueled the Stars with 22 kills and four blocks, while Sanja Vojnovic amassed 49 assists, four digs and three aces. Soraru, a junior from Mulhouse, France, compiled a sizzling .733 hitting percentage in 30 attacks without an error.
Dani Chase provided OCU with 21 digs and two aces, and Stefani Nell produced 12 kills and eight digs. Marijana Bjelobrk supplied the Stars with 11 kills, seven digs and three blocks, while Fia Faa'agi added seven kills and 11 digs. Caitlin Chamness served up six aces.
In the fifth set, OCU clinched the match with the final three points. Soraru's kill put the Stars ahead 13-12, then Chamness delivered the winning points on aces.
Nell and Soraru added kills before Drueppel's kill tied the set 12-12.
OCU scored the first four points of the set. Nell knocked down a kill, then teamed with Soraru on a block as the Stars led 3-0. Hastings rallied for a 7-6 edge on Clare Hamburger's ace.
The Stars responded with three consecutive points as Faa'agi and Bjelobrk hammered kills. Hastings answered with three points in a row. Logan Drueppel and Katie Placke combined on a block to put Hastings up 11-10.
Against Midland, Nell, a junior from Tulsa, Okla., notched 14 kills, and Soraru chipped in 12 kills. Vojnovic, a junior from Bajeljena, Bosnia, accumulated 46 assists, while Chase, a junior from Yukon, Okla., scooped up 11 digs. Chamness, a junior from Littleton, Colo., added six aces.
Oklahoma City meets Davenport (Mich.) at 9 a.m., then Montana Tech at 5 p.m. Saturday in Bellevue, Neb.
