OCU sweeps two matches Saturday

Stars turn in 3-1 showing in Missouri Valley Viking Invitational

MARSHALL, Mo. – Manon Soraru's career-best 25 kills lifted Oklahoma City University to a 25-19, 23-25, 22-25, 25-16, 15-8 win over William Woods (Mo.) on Saturday at the Burns Athletic Complex in the Missouri Valley Viking Invitational.
OCU completed the weekend 3-1, dumping Bethany (Kan.) 25-17, 25-18, 25-13 on Saturday morning. Fia Faa'agi, a sophomore from Murrieta, Calif., took all-tournament honors.  
In the decisive fifth set against William Woods, the Stars tallied the first six points of the set. Soraru hammered three kills, while Stefani Nell added a kill and Caitlin Chamness smacked down a service ace. Shekinah Clarke's kill put OCU up 7-1.
Faa'agi had back-to-back kills and a solo block to give the Stars an 11-6 lead. Nell and Soraru combined on a block for the match-clinching point.
Soraru, a junior from Mulhouse, France, added two aces and two blocks while surpassing her previous career high of 20 kills against Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Nov. 14, 2015. Sanja Vojnovic, a junior from Bajeljena, Bosnia, accumulated 60 assists and two aces, while Dani Chase, a junior from Mustang, Okla., posted 23 digs for the Stars.
OCU's Marijana Bjelobrk, a freshman from Belgrade, Serbia, produced 14 kills, four digs and two blocks, and Nell, a junior from Tulsa, Okla., added 13 kills and 11 digs. Faa'agi had 10 kills, and Chamness, a junior from Littleton, Colo., served up a career-high six aces.
The Stars face sixth-ranked Midland (Neb.) at 9 a.m., then fifth-ranked Hastings (Neb.) at 3 p.m. Sept. 2 in the Bellevue Labor Day Classic at Bellevue, Neb.
