Stars defeat Cavaliers in doubleheader

OCU takes two from SGU in Saturday's twin bill

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University powered past St. Gregory's 9-7 and 8-3 on Saturday at Jim Wade Stadium.
OCU starter Kenny Roder fanned 10 batters in game one, while Dilon Argo clubbed two home runs to guide the Stars in game two. The Stars improved to 36-17, 15-8 in Sooner Athletic Conference.
Oklahoma City came out firing in game one as Roder struck out the first three Cavaliers' batters and the offense put across three runs in the bottom half of the first inning.
Argo and Joe Lytle reached on a leadoff single and a throwing error, respectively, then Landon Coon scored Argo for the first OCU run on an RBI groundout. Dylan Delso followed with an RBI double to plate Lytle and Skyler Bean who pinch ran for Delso scored a batter later on a wild pitch.
The Stars added two runs in the second inning off a leadoff solo blast by Joe Haddox and an infield RBI single by Delso.
OCU further extended its lead in the fifth inning with four runs to make it a 9-0 lead. With the bases loaded, Argo hit a bases clearing triple down the right-field line that forced SGU's starter David Martinez out of the game for reliever Dennis Sims. Lytle hit a sacrifice fly in the next at-bat to bring Argo to the plate.
St. Gregory's exploded for seven runs off OCU reliever Ricky Spain in the seventh inning to cut the OCU lead to 9-7 on seven hits and a Stars error. Grant Hamilton of OCU recorded the last two outs the shut the door and earn his second save of the year.
Roder, a junior from Hobokan, N.J., moved to 4-2 on the season, while SGU's Martinez dropped to 5-7.
Argo, a senior from Jenks, Okla., finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs as Lytle and Delso also notched two-hits games.
The Stars jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game two off four hits including two first-inning homers. Argo led off the inning with his second homer of the season. Lytle reached on a bunt-single, stole second and advanced to third on a groundout. Jared Baker plated Lytle on an RBI double and Bissell followed with a two-run homer over the right-field wall.
The Cavaliers got one run back in the top of the second inning on an RBI double by Martinez, which scored Adrian Soltero who reached on an error.
Coon led off the bottom of the third inning with a double and scored on Bissell's single later in to inning to put OCU up 5-1.
The Stars strengthened their lead by three more runs in the fourth inning. Argo hit his third home run of the season, a two-run shot over the right-field fence. Two batters later, Coon launched a solo homer over the right-field wall that chased SGU starter Vicente Rodas out of the game for reliever Joseph Moro.
SGU added two runs in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI double and an RBI single but that was the closest the Cavaliers got as OCU reliever Holden Lyons pitched two scoreless innings of relief to seal the Stars' victory.
OCU starter Mark Simon improved to 7-4 in five innings pitched with four strikeouts. Rodas fell to 6-5 on the season.
Argo went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs. Coon, a senior from Dale, Okla., finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run, while Baker, a junior from Edmond, Okla., went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Stars finish the regular-season series against St. Gregory's at 4 p.m. Sunday at Jim Wade Stadium.
