OCU's McSpadden reaches 50 wins for 19th time

Stars take two from MACU to earn their 50th win of 2016

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University softball coach Phil McSpadden notched 50 wins in a season for the 19th time as the top-ranked Stars rolled past Mid-America Christian 13-0 and 6-1 on Thursday night at Ann Lacy Stadium.
Madison Ellis was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle as she led the Stars with four RBIs and three runs on three hits in game one, while Abby Meador and Leslie Miller combined to throw a two-hitter in game two. OCU improved to 50-1 and 21-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference play. Mid-America Christian dropped to 25-19, 10-12 in the SAC.
The Stars erupted in the bottom of the second inning of game one with 10 runs, all with two outs. With the bases loaded, Stephanie Koishor singled up the middle to plate Laci Joyner and Ellis, who reached on a single and a hit by pitch, respectively. In the next at-bat, Kali Pugh tripled to right-center field, scoring Stallbaumer and Koishor. Jaci Smith followed with a two-run home run over the right-field fence. Kyndra Holasek doubled to left-center field, which brought Miller up to the plate who led off the inning with a groundout. Miller drew a walk and Ellis cleared the bases with a towering home run that hit the OCU scoreboard in left field. Ellis' ninth homer of the season chased Evangels' starter Morgan Wardlow out of the game and brought in Marki Dethloff. The Stars weren't done scoring in the second inning as Joyner hit a triple and Stallbaumer sliced a single to left field to bring in Joyner. Ellis and Stallbaumer each notched two hits in the inning.
Oklahoma City piled it on in the third inning as Miller hit a RBI single, Ellis stroked an RBI double to right-center field and Joyner smacked a RBI double to left field to make it a 13-0 OCU lead.
Stars starter Georgia Wall moved to 16-0 in five scoreless innings of work with five strikeouts and two walks. Wardlow received the loss and fell to 10-6.
Joyner went 2-for-2 with two runs and a RBI, while Pugh finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs. Smith's home run was her sixth of the season.
In game two, Oklahoma City struck in the second inning again, but this time for a tone of four runs.  Koishor drew a leadoff walk, while Shelbi Legg followed with single to center field. Amanda Ingram knocked in Koishor with a single to center field and in the next at-bat Pugh singled to left-center to plate Legg. Smith drew a walk to load the bases, then Mid-America's Caitlin Swain walked Holasek which spelled the end of the day for Swain as Macie Crites came in to relieve. Crites yielded a run on a Miller groundout, but escaped the jam with a strikeout and another groundout.
The Stars added two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-run double to right-center field by Miller to make it a 6-0 Stars' advantage.
OCU starter Meador held the Evangels hitless through five innings with five strikeouts and received the win to go to 21-0 on the season. Miller surrendered two hits and one run in the last two innings, while recording one strikeout.
In the top of the seventh inning, MACU's Dethloff hit a single with the bases loaded to score the Evangels' lone run of the evening. Evangels' starter Swain picked up the loss to drop to 3-4 on the season.
Holasek went 2-for-2 with her 26th double of the season, which leads NAIA softball. Miller finished 1-for-4 with three RBIs.
The Stars face Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) in a doubleheader starting 2 p.m. Saturday at Ann Lacy Stadium.
