OKLAHOMA CITY – Top-ranked Oklahoma City University steamrolled Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) 12-1 and 16-0 in Saturday's doubleheader at Ann Lacy Stadium.
Jaci Smith powered the Stars in game one by going 3-for-3 with a home run, a double and a single, while Laci Joyner led all players with four hits in game two. The Stars, No.1-ranked in NAIA softball, moved to 52-1, 23-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference.
Oklahoma City grabbed an early 5-0 lead in game one in bottom of the first inning. Leslie Miller hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to plate the first run. Madison Ellis and Joyner hit consecutive RBI singles, then both scored when Shelbi Legg reached on a Lady Lions error.
Kali Pugh led off the bottom of the second inning with a solo shot over the left-field wall. Smith doubled to right-center field in the next at-bat and scored on a single by Kyndra Holasek to give the Stars a 7-0 advantage.
Smith clubbed a three-run home run over the right-field fence in the bottom half of the third inning to extend OCU's lead to 10-0.
SAGU's Kelsey Coburn hit a solo homer to lead off the fourth inning but the Stars responded with two more runs in the bottom of the frame. Sam Stallbaumer plated Joyner on an RBI groundout and Legg scored on a wild pitch.
OCU starter Miller fanned eight batters over five innings en route to improving to 14-1.
Smith, a freshman from Godley, Texas, had a team-high three RBIs and three runs. Ellis, Holasek and Joyner each recorded two-hit games.
In game two, the Stars jumped on top early again in the first inning as they batted around and put across eight runs. Pugh drilled a leadoff triple over the Lady Lions' right fielder and scored on a wild pitch on the first pitch of Smith's at-bat. Smith and Miller reached on consecutive singles, then Ellis reached on a SAGU error which brought Smith around to score. Joyner, Stephanie Koishor and Kayley Humann hit back-to-back-back run-scoring singles, followed by a three-run home run by Pugh.
OCU piled on six runs to strengthen the Stars lead to 14-0 in the bottom of the third inning on a total of six hits. With the bases loaded, Ellis doubled to right-center field to clear the bases. In the next at-bat, Joyner plated Ellis on an RBI single. After Koishor reached on a single, Humann hit a run-scoring double to left-center field and Stallbaumer sliced an RBI single in between the Lions' third baseman and the shortstop.
Stars added two more runs in the fourth inning on a Joyner RBI double and a run-scoring single by Koishor.
Oklahoma City starter Georgia Wall struck out eight Lady Lions over five innings, while moving to 17-0 on the season.
Ellis, Joyner and Pugh each recorded three RBIs and scored three times. Pugh went 2-for-3, and Ellis finished 1-for-4. Koishor, a junior from Valley Center, Calif., batted 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs.
The Stars face USAO in a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Lacy Ann Stadium.
