Three Stars earn all-American nods

McCarty, Derek Sivertsen snag repeat all-American honors

Ricky McCarty finished 40-4 this season.
TOPEKA, Kan. – Oklahoma City University's Ricky McCarty, Derek Sivertsen and Korey Walker took all-American accolades in the NAIA wrestling championships Saturday at the Kansas Expocentre.
McCarty and Sivertsen became two-time NAIA all-Americans. McCarty, a junior from Lawton, Okla., finished fourth place at 165 pounds, while Walker, a freshman from Midwest City, Okla., picked up fourth at 285 pounds. Sivertsen, a junior from Moore, Okla., placed seventh at 174 pounds.
Fifth-ranked Oklahoma City scored 47 points to post a 13th-place finish in the team standings.
McCarty, the 2015 165-pound NAIA champion, fell to fourth-ranked Taylor Hodel of Dickinson State (N.D.) by pin in 6:57 in the third-place match. McCarty, ranked second at 165, whipped seventh-ranked Mike Nord from Jamestown (N.D.) 13-2 in the quarterfinals before losing to No. 3 Dallas Houchins of Grand View (Iowa) 3-2 in the semifinals. McCarty (40-4) routed sixth-ranked Sean Black of Campbellsville (Ky.) 16-0 to advance to the third-place bout.
Walker dropped the third-place match 3-2 to Missouri Valley's Gabi Musallum, ranked No. 1 among NAIA heavyweights. Walker, ranked 11th, prevailed over ninth-ranked Justin Smith of Missouri Valley 9-3 in the quarters. In the semis, third-ranked Taylor Komoely from Montana State-Northern edged Walker 4-2 in the first tiebreaker period. Walker nipped eighth-ranked Chico Adams of Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) to get to the third-place contest.
Sivertsen posted a 6-3 victory over Campbellsville's Chuck Sharon to snare seventh place at 174. Sivertsen (36-12) battled through the consolation rounds with three victories, the last of which was a 7-4 win over sixth-ranked Justin Lozano from Menlo (Calif.). Seventh-ranked Kevin Corbett from Doane (Neb.) pinned Sivertsen in 6:48 to put eighth-ranked Sivertsen in the seventh-place match.
Zach Skates fell short of becoming OCU's first four-time wrestling all-American. Skates, a senior from Broken Arrow, Okla., finished 1-2 in the tournament. Skates went 34-5 this season and 157-35 in his Stars career. Skates set the OCU career record for victories.
Sivertsen, his brother Cody Sivertsen and Jacob King from OCU became NAIA scholar-athlete award winners. In order to be nominated by an institution's head coach or sports information director, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status to qualify for this honor.
Derek Sivertsen maintains a 3.78 cumulative grade-point average majoring in accounting, while Cody Sivertsen, a senior from Moore, Okla., has a 3.65 GPA pursuing an education degree. King, a junior from Rio Rancho, N.M., has turned in a 3.67 GPA studying business administration and environmental studies. Cody Sivertsen finished his OCU career 104-68.
