Wayland Baptist eliminates Stars from SAC Tournament 75-71

NAIA Tournament field to be announced 7 p.m. EST Wednesday

WAXAHACHIE, Texas – Oklahoma City University bowed out of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament men's basketball quarterfinals 75-71 to Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Thursday night at the Sheaffer Center.
Jonathan Reed, a sophomore from Powder Springs, Ga., paced the Stars with a career-best 17 points. OCU, ranked 22nd in NAIA Division I, dropped to 15-10.
The Stars will hope for an at-large berth in the NAIA Division I Tournament on March 16-22 at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo. The NAIA Tournament qualifiers and bracket will be unveiled live at 6 p.m. CST Wednesday on NAIAnetwork.com.  
OCU's Noel Allen, a senior from Guttenberg, N.J., recorded his third double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Terence Bonhomme, a sophomore from St. Martinville, La., posted 13 points and three steals in 40 minutes for the Stars.
Wayland Baptist scored the first nine points of the contest. Robert Waters nailed two 3-pointers, and Robert Lopez added another trey.
OCU seized the lead using an 11-2 run. Bonhomme triggered the OCU splurge with a trey, and Allen chipped in a bucket and two free throws. Jordan Mason knocked in a jumper for a 24-19 OCU edge with 7:06 left in the first period.
Bonhomme sank a jump shot for a 42-39 Stars lead with 16:44 to go. Wayland Baptist responded with Maurice Redmond and Marshall Nelson 3s to get ahead for good in the contest.
Wayland Baptist outscored OCU 27-16 in points off turnovers, taking advantage of the Stars' 24 giveaways.
