Stars blast USAO 11-1, 10-2

McSpadden stands two wins shy of 1,500 career victories

CHICKASHA, Okla. – Oklahoma City University stomped USAO 11-1 and 10-2 on Tuesday at Bill Smith Ballpark in a matchup of top 15-ranked teams in NAIA softball.
The sixth-ranked Stars improved to 20-0, 4-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. Phil McSpadden ran his record to 1,498-361 in his 28 years as OCU coach.
Oklahoma City next plays Friday in the Friends Tournament in Wichita, Kan., at 2 p.m. against Baker (Kan.) and 4 p.m. against Kansas Wesleyan.
McSpadden leads the nation in wins against four-year schools. With his 1,458th win on April 10, 2015 in Oklahoma City, McSpadden passed NCAA victory leader Margie Wright. With two wins Friday, McSpadden would become the first college softball coach in the nation with 1,500 wins against four-year schools.
Oklahoma City reached double figures in run for the 12th time and hits for the 18th time this year. USAO, ranked 13th in the NAIA, went to 6-6, 0-2 in league play.
In the first game, Madison Ellis and Laci Joyner supplied the Stars with two-run doubles. Ellis doubled in the first inning to put OCU up 4-0, and Joyner's double gave her team a 7-0 second-inning advantage. Bailey Whitmore reached home plate on a wild pitch for an 8-0 OCU lead in the second.
Kyndra Holasek capped the scoring by hammering a two-run home run in the fifth.
The Stars' Georgia Wall improved to 5-0 on the season. Wall, a freshman from Marlow, Okla., permitted one run on six hits and a walk in five innings.
Samantha Stallbaumer, a freshman from Haven, Kan., went 2-for-3, scored a run and stole two bases, and Holasek, a senior from Mustang, Okla., was 2-for-4 with a run scored, two runs driven in and a steal. Pugh, a junior from Vista, Calif., had a 2-for-4 showing with two runs scored.
In the nightcap, Stephanie Koishor, Kali Pugh and Jaci Smith pounded homers for the Stars. Pugh's first-inning two-run shot gave OCU a 2-0 lead.
Koisher nailed a third-inning three-run blast to put the Stars ahead 6-0. Smith followed in the next at-bat with a solo homer.
Smith, a freshman from Godley, Texas, paced the Stars attack with a 2-for-3, two runs scored, a stolen base and an RBI. Whitmore, a freshman from Oklahoma City, went 2-for-2.
Abby Meador struck out eight for OCU. Meador, a sophomore from Midwest City, Okla., allowed two unearned runs on six walks and two hits. Meador moved to 8-0.
