Stars open season with wins over Evangel

OCU takes both games in double-header

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University kicked off the 2016 season with a pair of wins over Evangel (Mo.) 14-11 and 7-0 on Thursday at Jim Wade Stadium.
Game one consisted of 36 hits and at least one run scored each inning, while in game two the Stars were able to shutout the Crusaders and limit them to four hits. OCU, ranked fifth in NAIA baseball, moved to 2-0, while Evangel dropped to 1-5.
The Crusaders drew first blood in game one as OCU's Cory Linn, a junior from Moore, Okla., misplayed a ball in right field, allowing EU's Austin Alfrey to come around to score.
OCU quickly gained the lead by putting up four runs in the bottom half of the first inning. Crusaders' starter Cory Neill threw a wild pitch on ball four against Linn, which plated Jared Baker for the first Stars run. The next batter, J.J. Bissell blasted a 3-run homerun over the right-centerfield fence to give OCU the lead 4-1.
OCU starter Matt Young ran into trouble in the second inning when Blake McCarty doubled to left-center to plate two runners and cut the stars lead to 4-3.
The Stars got the runs back plus two in the bottom half of the second inning on four singles. Baker, Landon Coon and Dylan Delso notched RBI singles. EU tapped into its bullpen and called upon Brad Potts to relieve Neill. Potts walked Linn to load the bases, before Bissell scored Coon on a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Crusaders led off the third inning with a double and single, before Cisneros singled in a run. Kirkpatrick singled to load the bases, prompting the Stars to replace Young with Ken Williams. Williams walked Kauffman, conceding a run and surrendered another run on a McCarty groundout.
Again, OCU responded in the bottom half of the inning with runs via RBI singles by Lytle and Baker RBI. Delso then roped a run-scoring double to right field to put the Stars ahead 11-6.
EU added a pair of runs in the fourth inning and one in the fifth inning but OCU matched it by scoring two runs in the fifth and a run in the sixth inning.
Kyle Thurman of EU hit a 2-run home run in the seventh inning to cut the OCU lead to 14-11 but Williams got Tanner Smith to strike out looking to end the game.
Williams, a junior from Renton, Wash., earned the win on 4.2 innings, five hits, five runs, six walks and two strikeouts.
Baker, a junior from Edmond, Okla., finished 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs, while Skyler Bean, a junior from Garland, Texas, went 3-for-4 with two runs.
In the second game, Baker crushed a solo home run to center field to give OCU the early 1-0 lead.
The Stars exploded in the fourth inning for five runs, four hits and three errors. Lytle singled in Garrett Foster, who led off the inning with a single. Baker reached on an error by EU's Jordan Kirkpatrick that scored Bean, who reached on an error before Lytle's single, and Lytle. Coon sent a ball streaking down the right field line to plate Baker. Delso then drilled an RBI double in the right-center gap to put the Stars up 6-0.
OCU used back-to-back sacrifice flies to score Hunter Marcum in the sixth inning to stretch the Stars' lead to 7-0.
The Stars' starter Jake Carson, a senior from Auburn, Wash., received the win on six innings of work with six strikeouts and only allowing three hits and two walks.
Ricky Spain, a senior from Norman, Okla., allowed one hit in a scoreless inning of relief.
Baker went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, while Coon, a senior from Dale, Okla., finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run.
