Stars topple Texas Wesleyan 74-73

Dunbar's follow shot puts OCU ahead with 1.5 seconds left

FORT WORTH, Texas – Lou Dunbar delivered the winning putback with 1.5 seconds left to bring Oklahoma City University a 74-73 victory over Texas Wesleyan on Thursday at the Sid Richardson Center.
Dunbar rebounded Evan White's 3-point try and tipped in the difference-making bucket. Oklahoma City, ranked 25th in NAIA Division I men's basketball, upended third-ranked Sooner Athletic Conference regular-season champion Texas Wesleyan.
Texas Wesleyan's Chris Gracela heaved a cross-court inbound pass to his teammate Sam Akano, who misfired on a desperation jumper as time expired. OCU (14-9, 11-6 SAC) halted Texas Wesleyan's 17-game winning streak, of which the past seven came by double-figure margins. Texas Wesleyan went to 23-5, 14-3 in the SAC.
Terence Bonhomme, a sophomore from St. Martinville, La., supplied the Stars with 17 points, three 3-pointers and two steals, while Jonathan Reed, a sophomore from Powder Springs, Ga., chipped in 11 points and four assists.
Dunbar, a sophomore from Seabrook, Texas, compiled 11 points while shooting 3-for-3 from 3-point territory, and Dorion Gigger, a junior from Oklahoma City, added 10 points and five rebounds for OCU.
"It was a great team win on the road tonight," OCU coach Vinay Patel said. "These guys just continue to fight. I thought we did a much better job defensively in the second half to give ourselves a chance late."
Texas Wesleyan posted the game's first seven points. Akano threw down a fastbreak dunk to give the Rams a 7-0 lead with 17:21 to go in the first. With four seconds left in the half, Dunbar sank a trey to provide the Stars a 41-40 halftime edge.
Jerell Ellis put Texas Wesleyan on top 61-54 with a 3-point play at the 9:31 mark of the second half. The game featured 11 lead changes, including five in the final 3:36 of the game.
Gigger hit free throws for a 68-67 OCU edge with 3:36 showing. Dion Rogers downed free throws, but Gigger responded with a lay-in for a 70-69 Stars lead with 2:12 to go.
Ellis' jumper with 1:11 left gave Wesleyan a 71-70 lead, but Brandon Patten's jumper in the lane put OCU in front 72-71 with 40 seconds remaining.
Akano connected on a go-ahead jumper for Texas Wesleyan with 18 seconds left. Henry Buckley blocked White's jumper with eight seconds showing, but OCU remained in possession to set up an inbounds play underneath its basket.
OCU closes out the regular season against St. Gregory's at 5 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena on senior night.
