OCU qualifies 10 for NAIA Championships

Stars take first regional/qualifying group tournament title ever

OKLAHOMA CITY – Ten Oklahoma City University wrestlers secured NAIA Championships berths after the Stars captured the NAIA South Qualifying Group Wrestling Tournament on Saturday at Putnam City High School.
OCU's Adrian Gaines at 125 pounds, Ricky McCarty at 165 and Zach Skates at 157 took tournament championships. Evan Hudson at 184, James Landoll at 141, Cody Sivertsen at 197, Derek Sivertsen at 174 and 285-pounder Korey Walker picked up runner-up finishes for the fourth-ranked Stars.
Bryson McGowan at 285 and Jamie Shawver at 174 placed third to round out OCU's national tournament qualifiers. McCarty will strive to defend his 2015 165-pound national championship in the NAIA Championships on March 4-5 in Topeka, Kan.
Alvie Killingsworth had a sixth-place finish at 125, and Miguel Tovar finished sixth at 197 for the Stars. OCU won its first regional/qualifying group crown ever.
"We wrestled well today," said OCU coach Archie Randall, who was named south qualifier coach of the year. "Qualifying 10 wrestlers to the national tournament gives us a great opportunity to accomplish our goal of winning the national championship."
Gaines won the 125-pound qualifier title with a 6-4 decision over Robert Ozuna from York (Neb.). Gaines, a junior from Lawton, Okla., pinned Quinton Harrison from Bethany (Kan.) in 28 seconds in the quarterfinals and blanked York's Oscar Marin 6-0 in the semifinals. Gaines remained unbeaten, moving to 20-0 on the season. Gaines, the No. 1-ranked 125-pounder in the NAIA, will try to repeat as an all-American.
McCarty won 10-2 over Bacone's Joseph McAleavey in the 165-pound final. McCarty, a junior from Lawton, Okla., added a 14-1 major decision over Romen Correa of Wayland Baptist (Texas) and a 16-0 pasting of Zachary Sanders from Ottawa (Kan.). McCarty, ranked No. 2 at 197, moved to 37-2.
Skates prevailed 9-2 over Victor Thomas of Wayland Baptist in the 157-pound title match. Skates, a senior from Broken Arrow, Okla., also had a 12-5 win over Austin Coy of York. Skates (33-3) sits at second in the 157-pound rankings. He will attempt to become OCU's first four-time all-American in March.
Derek Sivertsen, a junior from Moore, Okla., will seek his second all-American nod.
