Stars stomp Bacone 77-57

OCU posts second 20-point win of season

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University crushed Bacone 77-57 on Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Terence Bonhomme, a sophomore from St. Martinsville, La., produced 14 points, four 3-pointers and two steals for OCU. The Stars, ranked 25th in NAIA Division I men's basketball, improved to 13-8, 10-5 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
OCU's Jordan Mason, a junior from Ennis, Texas, reached double figures in scoring for the second time in three games with 11 points and a season-best eight rebounds, and Dorion Gigger, a junior from Oklahoma City, recorded his eighth double-double with 10 points and 16 rebounds.
Oklahoma City owned a 43-24 rebounding advantage. The Stars built advantages in second-chance points (20-6) and points off the bench (34-10). OCU led from wire-to-wire, growing its margin to 24 points late in the game.
Late in the first half, Evan White bookended a 15-0 run with treys to build a 31-13 OCU lead with 4:59 left. Mason tallied seven points to highlight the OCU surge. Bacone stormed back by scoring the game's next 15 points.
"I like us to be very aggressive," OCU coach Vinay Patel said. "I want us diving on the floor, I want us taking charges and going to the basket. I don't think we did that in that spurt, and that's why they went on their run. When we came out, you saw several guys diving for the ball. Terence Bonhomme in the second half, Evan White in the second half. Dorion Gigger laid out for one. That's what we have been hanging our hat on all year, and that's tough things. We did a lot better job of that in the second half."
The Stars forged a 58-43 advantage with a 10-2 splurge midway through the second period. Lou Dunbar sparked OCU with seven points in a row – a putback, two free throws and a transition 3 to give OCU its 15-point lead.
"The game was going how we wanted to defensively for us the first 12, 13 minutes of the half," Patel said. "All of a sudden, we turned the basketball over. They were driving on us. We had 12 turnovers at halftime. I was really proud we came back and only had three of those in the second half. Sometimes we just get careless with the basketball and make foolish mistakes. We are trying to eliminate those mistakes."
Oklahoma City squares off with USAO at 5 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
