OCU pulls out 71-67 win over Southwestern Christian

Dunbar pours in 27 points, including five points in game's final six seconds

OKLAHOMA CITY – Lou Dunbar's jumper with six seconds left brought Oklahoma City University a 71-67 victory over Southwestern Christian on Monday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Dunbar struck for 27 points and six 3-pointers to lift the Stars. OCU, ranked 23rd in NAIA Division I men's basketball, moved to 12-8, 9-5 in the Sooner Athletic Conference to hold third place in the league by itself.
Dunbar, a sophomore from Seabrook, Texas, hit 8 of 14 shots from the field and 6 of 9 3-point shots for OCU. Dunbar collected an offensive rebound of Terence Bonhomme's miss and dropped in a short jump shot to put the Stars on top 68-67 with six seconds to go.
On Southwestern Christian's inbounds play, Jamil Donovan of OCU knocked away the pass to Marvin White to turn the ball over to the Stars. Dunbar drew a foul, then dropped in a free throw.
Dunbar missed his second free-throw try, but rebounded the miss and drew another foul. Dunbar added two more free throws to give OCU a four-point lead with two seconds remaining. Southwestern Christian's desperation long 3-point shot missed as time expired.
"It feels good to come out on this end," OCU coach Vinay Patel said. "They really, really played their tails off for 40 minutes this game."
The Stars won the rebounding battle 40-33 and outscored Southwestern Christian 15-7 in second-chance points. Brandon Patten, a sophomore from Orange Park, Fla., came off the bench to lead OCU with 10 rebounds.
Bonhomme, a sophomore from St. Martinsville, La., posted 16 points, nine rebounds and three steals for the Stars. Dorion Gigger, a junior from Oklahoma City, grabbed six rebounds, while Alex James, a sophomore from Plano, Texas, made his second consecutive start and contributed four points and three rebounds for OCU.
"Alex James was huge early," Patel said. "He is playing his best basketball just in time. He went right at the 6-foot-10 guy. I thought it set the tone for us. Rebounding was something I was really concerned about because they had such a size advantage on us. We had some guys come up with some big rebounds for us. Brandon Patten had 10 rebounds. That's tremendous. Brandon Patten, Dorion Gigger, Alex James – I give them credit because they were big-time tonight."
Jonathan Reed matched OCU's largest lead by scoring on a layup for a 63-56 Stars advantage with 4:20 to go.
With 2:35 left, Dunbar downed a trey to give OCU a 66-60 lead. White responded with the game's next seven points.
White hit a 3 and two free throws. White's lay-in put Southwestern Christian up 67-66 with 26 seconds left. Dunbar answered with the contest's final five points.
"
He could have made that a lot easier on us by just hitting the free throw," Patel said of Dunbar's miss. "We had one of our best practices of the year yesterday. I told them we won that game yesterday in practice. I felt really good about it. My wife called and asked, 'How was practice?' and I said it was probably the best practice we have had in a while. I thought we won that there. If we can bring that the rest of the week, taking it a day at a time and worry about winning practice, the games will come a little bit easier."
OCU plays next against Bacone at 8 p.m. Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
