OCU vs. Randall men's basketball preview

Stars make 2016-17 home debut

THE MATCHUP:
Oklahoma City University opens the regular season in a matchup with Randall, the defending National Christian College Athletic Association Division II champion.
Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students, while OCU students, faculty and staff are allowed into all regular-season OCU athletics events for free with their ID. If the Stars score 70 points, fans will get a prize from Raising Cane's. For the OCU athletics visitors guide, click here.

ABOUT THE STARS: Oklahoma City fell to Midwestern State 96-82 on Monday at D.L. Ligon Coliseum in Wichita Falls, Texas. The Stars shot 44.1 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point range in the loss.
Terence Bonhomme, a 6-foot junior from St. Martinsville, La., scored 31 points to lead OCU while also dishing out six assists, grabbing four rebounds and hitting seven 3-pointers in the contest. Bonhomme went 9-for-19 from the field and shot 53.8 percent from beyond the arc.
Xavier Smith, a 6-9 senior from Richardson, Texas, provided the Stars with 15 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots. Tyler Alderman, a 6-9 senior from Fishers, Ind., produced eight points, eight rebounds and four assists.
Last season, the Stars ranked 18th in NAIA Division I with 12.9 offensive rebounds per game. To see how OCU ranked statistically in the NAIA, click here.
OCU was ranked 18th in the preseason poll as the Stars were included among the preseason top 25 for the first time since 2008. The Stars have been picked to take second in the SAC according to the preseason coaches' poll. Oklahoma City owns six NAIA national championships won in 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996, 2007 and 2008.
OCU routed Randall 82-36 on Nov. 2, 2006 at Abe Lemons Arena in the only meeting between the two teams in men's basketball. Randall is formerly known as Hillsdale Baptist. The Stars went on to win the national championship that season.

ABOUT THE SAINTS: Randall dropped a 90-80 matchup with Grace Bible (Mich.) in the John F. Bailey Charity Tournament on Saturday in Grand Rapids, Mich. The Saints are 2-2 on the young campaign.
Antonio Wilson, a 5-9 sophomore, spearheaded Randall with 29 points, nine assists and seven 3-pointers against Grace Bible. Trey Sneed, a 6-4 junior, averaged 19.3 points per game last season while shooting 53.1 percent from the floor and 45.8 percent from 3-point range. He also led the NCCAA with 10.5 rebounds per game last season.
Randall is a part of the National Christian College Athletic Association and went 22-11 last season.
 
ABOUT THE COACHES: Vinay Patel enters his second season as OCU head coach. In his first year, Oklahoma City finished 15-11 and tied for second in the Sooner Athletic conference. Before coming to OCU, he spent one season as Rogers State's assistant coach and aided the Hillcats to a 20-8 season led by conference player of the year Frederico Santos. Patel spent nine years as assistant at West Texas A&M. During that time, West Texas went to the NCAA Division II Tournament five times, won the Lone Star Conference championship and took two Lone Star South Division titles. He elevated to the interim head-coaching position before he ended his time at West Texas A&M.
Mark Berokoff is in his fifth year as the head men's basketball coach at Randall. Coach Berokoff came to Randall after one year as the director of basketball operations for the Texas State men's basketball team.
