OCU aims to extend its five-game winning streak

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University carries a five-game win streak into its conference opener against John Brown (Ark.).
 
ABOUT THE STARS: Oklahoma City dropped Southern-New Orleans 91-74 on Saturday at The Castle in New Orleans. The Stars (6-1) shot 62.3 percent from the floor while limiting Southern-New Orleans to 32.3 percent.
Daniela Wallen, the two-time reigning Sooner Athletic Conference player of the week, posted 22 points, 13 rebounds and three assists in what was her fourth double-double in seven games this season. Wallen, a 5-foot-11 senior from Caracas, Venezuela, leads OCU with 21.3 points, 9.6 rebounds and 2.57 steals per contest. She ranks eighth in NAIA Division I in points per game.
Brooke Irwin, a 6-3 junior from Mustang, Okla., struck for 19 points and nine rebounds on 8-for-10 shooting from the field. Irwin accumulates 12.1 points and 6.4 rebounds per game with a 64.5 field-goal percentage, which ranks third in the NAIA. Daniela Galindo, a 5-10 junior from Shattuck, Okla., also had 19 points to go along with three assists and two rebounds. Galindo averages 17.4 points, 4.1 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.43 steals in per game.

The Stars hold the 19th spot in the preseason national rankings. OCU extended its streak of top-25 showings to 205 consecutive polls since 1999-2000. OCU owns national championships from 1988, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2012, 2014 and 2015. SAC coaches installed the Stars as the league's preseason favorite. OCU has won or shared the SAC regular-season crown 16 times.
Oklahoma City leads the overall series vs. John Brown 45-5. The Stars picked up a 56-42 victory over John Brown on Jan. 30 in Siloam Springs, Ark., in the most recent meeting. Wallen reeled in 19 points and 12 rebounds.
 
ABOUT THE GOLDEN EAGLES: JBU is coming off a thrilling 66-64 victory over No. 22 Cumberland (Tenn.) on Saturday in Jackson, Tenn. John Brown (6-3) ended the game on a 15-4 run to knock off its second ranked team of the season.
Kodee Powell, a 5-4 senior, had 18 points, including the game-winning 3-pointer with 13 seconds left on the clock, to go along with three rebounds and three assists. Powell averages 11.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists per contest while shooting 59 percent from beyond the arc. Baily Cameron, a 5-10 sophomore, had 17 points, four rebounds and three treys. Cameron averages 16.6 points and 8.1 rebounds per game.
John Brown ranks first in the NAIA in both 3-pointers made per game (10.2) and free-throw percentage (80.8 percent). The Golden Eagles were receiving votes in the NAIA preseason poll and were picked to take third in the SAC.
 
ABOUT THE COACHES: Bo Overton returns to OCU for his second season as its head coach. Overton has coaching experience on the professional level in China, Russia and the WNBA, as well as college head-coaching experience with Missouri-Kansas City. Overton has been an assistant on the international level for the Bahamas and China, including the 2012 Olympics with the Chinese team.
Jeff Soderquist enters his 20th season at the helm of the women's basketball program at John Brown. As the winningest coach in program history, Soderquist currently holds an overall record of 285-312 (.477) and has guided the Golden Eagles to four trips to the NAIA Tournament in 2004, 2006, 2011 and 2014.
