OCU outlasts LSU-Shreveport 101-90

Stars forge best start to season since 2010-11

SHAWNEE, Okla. – Oklahoma City University collected a 101-90 win over LSU-Shreveport on Saturday at Don Sumner Field House in a showdown of top 25-ranked NAIA men's basketball teams.
Terence Bonhomme, a junior from St. Martinville, La., lifted the Stars with 29 points and six 3-pointers. OCU, ranked 18th in NAIA Division I, owns its first 6-0 start since 2010-11, while 24th-ranked LSU-Shreveport went to 5-2.
Oklahoma City has its best start since its 2010-11 team started off 7-0. The Stars topped 100 points for the first time since a 109-97 win over Central Oklahoma on Nov. 22, 2014 in Edmond, Okla. OCU reached 90 points for the fifth time this season.
The Stars knocked off 14th-ranked Our Lady of the Lake and No. 24 LSU-Shreveport this weekend in the St. Gregory's Thanksgiving Classic heading into the Sooner Athletic Conference schedule. OCU edged Langston, which received votes in the preseason poll, on Tuesday at home.
"This was a great end to a huge week for us," OCU coach Vinay Patel said. "When we built this schedule we really wanted to test our team before conference play. To go 3-0 this week says a lot about our basketball team. LSUS has a very talented team, and we knew we were going to have to play well to have a chance."
Bonhomme shot 6-for-8 from 3-point range and 9-for-9 on free throws while swiping two steals. Xavier Smith, a senior from Richardson, Texas, posted 27 points and 13 rebounds while hitting all seven of his free-throw tries for OCU.
Lou Dunbar, a junior from Seabrook, Texas, tallied 14 points, and Brandon Patten, a junior from Orange Park, Fla., added 10 points for the Stars.
LSU-Shreveport became the first team this season to own the rebounding advantage on OCU, grabbing 35 to the Stars' 33.
"I was a little discouraged because we got beat on the glass, but we did a great job knocking free throws in down the stretch to maintain our lead," Patel said. "We continue to get help from a lot of different guys offensively, and hopefully can shift some focus to the defensive end of the floor moving forward."
Oklahoma City sank 27 of 32 free throws and shot 10-for-10 from the free-throw line in the final 1:14. Dunbar and Smith contributed a pair of free throws each to keep OCU in front in the last minute of the game.
LSU-Shreveport cut the Stars' lead to one point midway through the second half, but Dunbar answered with a jumper in the paint to keep LSU-Shreveport at bay. Smith's 3-point play ballooned Oklahoma City's lead to its largest of the day at 42-24 with 4:14 remaining in the first period.
The Stars open league play 8 p.m. Thursday against John Brown (Ark.) in Siloam Springs, Ark.
