OCU dispatches Wayland Baptist

13th-ranked Stars increase winning string to 11, stay unbeaten within conference play

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University derailed Wayland Baptist (Texas) 25-22, 25-22, 25-22 on Friday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Marijana Bjelobrk, a freshman from Belgrade, Serbia, produced 13 kills and two blocks for the Stars. OCU, ranked 13th in NAIA volleyball, moved to 19-3, 10-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Oklahoma City prevailed in a clash of teams undefeated within conference play entering the match. The Stars ran their win streak to 11 in a row and halted Wayland Baptist's winning string at nine consecutive victories. Wayland Baptist, receiving votes in the national poll, dropped to 15-8, 8-1 in league play.
"Tonight our crowd was huge," OCU coach Kyle Steele said. "It was fun to have an awesome home-court advantage. Defensively, we really did our job. We had eight blocks in three sets, which is really good for us, and a lot of digs. We took them out of their offense, they had to tip it a lot and put us in our offense."
Fia Faa'agi, a sophomore from Murrieta, Calif., posted 12 kills and five digs, while Stefani Nell, a junior from Tulsa, Okla., contributed 11 kills, 14 digs and four blocks for OCU.
The Stars' Sanja Vojnovic, a junior from Bajeljena, Bosnia, rang up 41 assists and six digs, and Shekinah Clarke, a sophomore from Waianae, Hawaii, tracked down 16 digs.
Manon Soraru, a junior from Mulhouse, France, provided OCU with seven kills and five blocks, while Dani Chase, a junior from Yukon, Okla., added 11 digs. Holly Randall, a junior from Edmond, Okla., chipped in three kills and three blocks.
OCU took the lead in the third set with six consecutive points. The Stars had four team blocks, three of which came from Nell, during that stretch. The Stars led 13-8 on Nell's kill.
Bjelobrk pounded a kill to put OCU ahead 23-14. The Stars withstood Wayland Baptist's 7-0 run to put away the win on kills from Nell and Soraru.
In the second set, OCU reeled off a 5-0 run to go up 21-14. Bjelobrk and Faa'agi recorded two kills each in the Stars' splurge.
Oklahoma City secured the first set by racking up the final five points of the set. Faa'agi picked up two kills, while Randall nailed a kill and teamed with Vojnovic on a block to spark OCU.
"It's nice to be in sole possession of first right now," Steele said. "We'll take it and run with it. We're in a tough spot. We have to win every night, otherwise, we could drop. There's some pressure behind that. The girls have played like there has been pressure the past couple of weeks. Tonight we played a much better match."
The Stars return to action 7 p.m. Tuesday against Mid-America Christian at Abe Lemons Arena.
