Stars trample John Brown

13th-ranked OCU records 10th consecutive win

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. – Oklahoma City University popped John Brown (Ark.) 25-15, 25-22, 25-19 on Wednesday night at Bill George Arena.
Manon Soraru, a junior from Mulhouse, France, spearheaded OCU with 13 kills, eight digs and two aces. The Stars, ranked 13th in NAIA volleyball, kept its league record spotless, going to 18-3, 9-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Oklahoma City's win set up a contest between teams undefeated in SAC play. The Stars square off with Wayland Baptist (Texas) at 7 p.m. Friday at Abe Lemons Arena. Wayland Baptist enters the match 15-7, 8-0 in the SAC. Fans will be treated to free pizza at the match.
The Stars racked up their 10th victory in a row.
"We had a great balanced offense for a total team win," OCU coach Kyle Steele said. "We stayed intense on defense minus the second set run, but I was very pleased with the effort and leadership our team displayed."
Marijana Bjelobrk, a freshman from Belgrade, Serbia, knocked down 12 kills, while Fia Faa'agi, a sophomore from Murrieta, Calif., smacked 11 kills for the Stars. Sanja Vojnovic, a junior from Bajeljena, Bosnia, rang up 46 assists, four kills and two aces, and Kenzie McMullen, a junior from Edmond, Okla., picked up a career-best 12 digs for OCU.
Soraru posted a .611 hitting percentage, marking the fourth time this year she had a hitting percentage .600 or better. Vojnovic notched 40 assists in the ninth contest and surpassed her season best in a three-set match in 2016. Vojnovic had the most assists by a Star in a three-set match since sets were decided in 25 points.
The Stars reeled off an 8-0 splurge to take the first set. Soraru ignited the run with a kill and two aces. Shekinah Clarke clinched the first set with back-to-back kills.
In the second set, OCU erased a 14-7 deficit. The Stars tied the set 16-16 with five points in a row as Faa'agi had two kills. OCU ran off another 5-0 run to set up set point at 24-20 powered by Stefani Nell's three kills.
In the third set, Bjelobrk hammered a pair of kills to spark a 6-0 Stars run to build a 21-14 lead. OCU finished off the win with three points in a row. Clarke came up with a kill, Bjelobrk and Soraru teamed on a block, then on match set, McMullen served up an ace.
