OCU edges Texas Wesleyan

Stars move to 4-0 in five-set matches in 2016

FORT WORTH, Texas – Oklahoma City University prevailed 14-25, 26-24, 17-25, 25-19, 15-5 over Texas Wesleyan on Saturday at the Sid Richardson Center.
Marijana Bjelobrk, a freshman from Belgrade, Serbia, totaled a season-best 19 kills to go with four digs and two blocks for Oklahoma City. The Stars, ranked 13th in NAIA volleyball, improved to 22-3, 13-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
OCU remained unbeaten in five-set matches, moving to 4-0 this year. The Stars' overall winning string stretched to 14, while their win streak within the conference reached 16. OCU's last SAC loss came Oct. 30, 2015 at Texas Wesleyan.
"It was a big road test," OCU coach Kyle Steele said. "Wesleyan played a great match and forced us to step up and meet the intensity that this match required. They had girls diving all over the place and made us work for every point. I'm glad we stepped up to the plate in sets four and five and looked like OCU volleyball again."
The Stars rang up the final six points and 11 of the last 12 points of the match. Bjelobrk sparked the game-turning 6-0 run by nailing a kill, then tallied the clinching kill.
Manon Soraru, Fia Faa'agi and Holly Randall pounded kills to give Oklahoma City a 9-4 edge. Faa'agi and Randall combined on a block to put OCU up 11-5.
OCU's Sanja Vojnovic, a junior from Bajeljena, Bosnia, turned in her second 50-assist match of the season with 54 to go with seven digs. Shekinah Clarke, a sophomore from Waianae, Hawaii, notched 12 kills, 10 digs and three blocks, while Dani Chase, a junior from Yukon, Okla., reeled in 19 digs for the Stars.
Faa'agi, a sophomore from Murrieta, Calif., posted 11 kills and three blocks, and Soraru, a junior from Mulhouse, France, supplied OCU with 11 kills, three digs, two aces and two blocks. Randall, a junior from Edmond, Okla., added six kills and four blocks.
Oklahoma City faces Southwestern Christian at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
