OCU takes fifth in NWCA National Duals

Stars improve to 9-3 against top-25 foes

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Oklahoma City University posted a fifth-place finish in the NWCA National Duals after a 24-12 victory over Life (Ga.) on Saturday at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
Alvie Killingsworth and Ricky McCarty pinned their opponents to key the Stars against sixth-ranked Life. Seventh-ranked OCU (13-3) advanced to the fifth-place dual with a 21-18 win over 14th-ranked Lindsey Wilson (Ky.).
OCU placed in the NWCA National Duals for the third time in program history. The Stars previously picked up fourth in the 2012 event and fifth in 2008.
In the fifth-place contest, Killingsworth recorded the fall in 1:42 over Quintni Noel at 133 pounds to give OCU a 9-0 dual lead. Life won the next three matches to tie the dual 9-9.
McCarty pinned Anthony Codella in 1:22 in the 165-pound bout to put OCU back on top 15-9. Jamie Shawver and Derek Sivertsen followed with victories to widen the Stars' lead to 21-9. Sivertsen edged Jacob Dempsey 7-6 at 184.
Against Lindsey Wilson, Derek and Cody Sivertsen had back-to-back falls at 184 and 197 pounds to propel OCU. Those pins erased a 16-9 deficit.
Lindsey Wilson won four consecutive matches to build a 13-3 lead. McCarty, a junior from Lawton, Okla., won his match by disqualification to cut OCU's deficit to 13-9.
Chico Adams took the 285-pound match 12-3 over OCU's Bryson McGowan, but that wasn't enough to rally Lindsey Wilson.
The Stars meet Central Baptist (Ark.) at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Conway, Ark.
