Stars look for season sweep of John Brown

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University begins the second leg of Sooner Athletic Conference play by meeting John Brown (Ark.) in the second of the home-and-home series between the two teams this season.
 
ABOUT THE STARS: Oklahoma City suffered an 82-67 setback to 21st-ranked Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena. The Stars (11-5, 8-1 SAC) saw their 12-game conference winning streak, 28-game home winning string and 33-game win streak in conference home games end.
Daniela Wallen, a 5-foot-11 junior from Caracas, Venezuela, topped OCU with 28 points, eight rebounds and five steals. Wallen propels the Stars with 21.9 points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.40 steals per contest.
Allison Frey, a 5-9 sophomore from Mustang, Okla., chipped in 12 points and two assists. Frey posts 11.0 points and 2.4 rebounds per game while shooting 37.8 percent on 3-pointers. Markeisha Johnson, a 5-9 senior from Mansura, La., had nine points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals. Johnson averages 7.8 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.27 steals a game.
The Stars rank 14th with a team field-goal percentage of 42.1 percent, while Wallen ranks second with 7.0 defensive rebounds per game among NAIA Division I. To see how OCU compares with the NAIA Division I statistical leaders this season, click here.
Oklahoma City holds the 14th spot in this week's NAIA Division I rankings. OCU made the top 25 for the 196th consecutive poll since 1999-2000. Oklahoma City owns national championships from 1988, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2012, 2014 and 2015. The Stars were expected to finish second in the preseason SAC poll. OCU has won or shared the regular-season league title 16 times, including the last six.
OCU has gone 44-5 against John Brown over the years. In the NAIA game of the week, the Stars ripped John Brown 84-50 on Jan. 9 at Abe Lemons Arena. Wallen powered OCU with 23 points and 10 rebounds.

ABOUT THE GOLDEN EAGLES: John Brown routed St. Gregory's 76-41 on Thursday in Siloam Springs, Ark. John Brown (12-9, 5-4 SAC) shot a season-best 60 percent from the field.
Baily Cameron, a 5-10 freshman, recorded 17 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Cameron supplies her team 12.2 points, 7.1 rebounds and 1.25 steals per game. Brooke Barker, a 6-foot senior, had 17 points, eight rebounds and two steals. Barker averages 14.1 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.29 thefts a game.
John Brown checks in at No. 2 in the NAIA with 173 treys made this season. John Brown had been slotted for fifth place in the preseason SAC coaches' poll.

ABOUT THE COACHES: Bo Overton is in his debut season with OCU. Overton has a wide array of head-coaching experience on the professional level in China, Russia and the WNBA, as well as college head-coaching experience with Missouri-Kansas City. Overton has been an assistant on the international level for the Bahamas and China, including the 2012 Olympics with the Chinese team. Overton is well known among Oklahomans for his stint as an assistant to Sherri Coale at Oklahoma from 1998-2004 as well as playing college basketball at Oklahoma.
Jeff Soderquist is John Brown's winningest women's basketball coach with a 279-307 record in his 19th season. The John Brown alum led the Golden Eagles to their finest season ever in 2013-14 at 28-8. He took John Brown to its first semifinals appearance in four NAIA Tournament appearances. Prior to becoming head women's basketball coach, he had been men's basketball assistant coach, men's tennis coach and sports information director at John Brown.
