OCU secures 70-67 win over Wayland Baptist

Stars move up in conference standings

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University hung onto a 70-67 victory over Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Robert Waters misfired on the potential game-tying 3-pointer with four seconds left as OCU's Jonathan Reed rejected the shot. The Stars stood a game behind the co-leaders in the Sooner Athletic Conference men's basketball standings at 9-6, 6-3 in the league.
Dorion Gigger hauled in the rebound off the miss to help OCU secure the win. The Stars' Lou Dunbar nailed three free throws in the final minute, and Terence Bonhomme added a pair of foul shots with eight seconds showing to salt away the outcome.
Bonhomme answered after Anietie Jack jammed in a putback with 11 seconds showing to cut Oklahoma City's lead to 68-67.
Dunbar, a sophomore from Seabrook, Texas, rang up 17 points in 17 minutes of play, downing four 3-pointers in as many tries. Dunbar helped OCU outscore Wayland Baptist 31-22 in points from the bench.
Bonhomme, a sophomore from St. Martinville, La., contributed 13 points and 8-of-8 shooting from the free-throw line. Gigger, a junior from Oklahoma City, posted his team-best fifth double-double with 10 points, 14 rebounds and two steals.
Dunbar hit free throws to put OCU on top 53-40 with 12:17 left. Bonhomme dropped in free throws for a 62-53 Stars advantage at the 7:05 mark.
Wayland Baptist melted away the OCU lead with a 7-0 run. Jordon Tolbert's lay-in sliced Wayland Baptist's deficit to 62-60 with 2:31 to go.
Jamil Donovan splashed home a trey off Reed's feed to grow the Stars' edge to 65-60 with two minutes left. OCU sank 5 of 6 free throws the remainder of the game and 14 of 17 foul shots overall.
The Stars visit John Brown (Ark.) for a 5 p.m. tilt Saturday in Siloam Springs, Ark.
