Skates of Stars makes Viking-Warrior Open finals

Senior from Broken Arrow, Okla., places in fifth open tournament this season

Zach Skates advanced to a tournament championship match for the third time this season.

FREMONT, Neb. – Zach Skates highlighted Oklahoma City University's showing with a runner-up finish in the Midland Viking-Warrior Open on Saturday at Hopkins Arena.
Miguel Tovar took third place at 197 pounds for the Stars. Alvie Killingsworth at 125 and James Landoll at 141 pulled off fourth-place finishes for OCU, seventh in the latest NAIA wrestling rankings.
Skates fell 3-2 to Bubba Jaramillo of Nebraska-Kearney in the 157-pound championship match. Skates, a senior from Broken Arrow, Okla., went to second in the latest 157-pound NAIA rankings. Skates advanced to the final with a 6-3 win over Kade Sander of Barton County (Kan.).
In 2015-16, Skates has placed in four open tournaments and reached the finals three times.
Tovar, a junior from El Paso, Texas, took a forfeit from Hudson Buck of Dickinson State (S.D.) in the 197-pound third-place bout. Buck is ranked fifth among NAIA 197-pounders.
OCU competes in the NWCA National Duals on Jan. 8-9 in Fort Wayne, Ind.
