Gaines of OCU rolls to Missouri Valley Invitational crown

Junior from Lawton, Okla., wins tournament outstanding wrestler honor

MARSHALL, Mo. – Adrian Gaines of Oklahoma City University took outstanding wrestler and the 125-pound title in the Missouri Valley Invitational on Saturday at the Burns Gymnasium.
The Stars' Korey Walker picked up fifth place at 285 pounds, while Cody Sivertsen placed seventh at 197 pounds. OCU, ranked seventh in NAIA wrestling, finished 12th with 63 team points.
Gaines, a junior from Lawton, Okla., whipped Quintel Fuchs of Montana State-Northern 23-7 in the 125-pound championship final. Gaines, ranked 14th in the NAIA, pinned Dmitri Smith of Concordia (Neb.) in 5:55 in the semifinals and Kyle Penalosa of Waldorf (Iowa) in 2:21 in the third round. Gaines (14-0) rolled to two other technical-fall victories.
Walker, a freshman from Midwest City, Okla., won 12-8 over Deaken McCoy of St. Catherine (Ky.) to take fifth place among the 285-pounders. Walker holds the 12th spot among the NAIA's 285-pound rankings.
Sivertsen, a senior from Moore, Okla., gutted out a 3-2 win over Sam Reeves of Truman (Mo.) for seventh place at 197.
The Stars wrestle Ouachita Baptist (Ark.) at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Arkadelphia, Ark.
