SAGU clips Stars 78-75 in OT

Alexander sinks deciding trey with nine seconds to go

OKLAHOMA CITY – Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) slipped past Oklahoma City University 78-75 in overtime Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Terence Bonhomme powered the Stars with 30 points and eight 3-pointers. Oklahoma City went to 6-6, 3-3 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, and Southwestern Assemblies, ranked 18th in NAIA Division I men's basketball, improved to 14-4, 5-1 in the SAC.
Jason Gentry nailed a trey with nine seconds left in overtime to give Southwestern Assemblies of God the victory. OCU's Jamil Donovan missed a 3, then Noel Allen rebounded and set up Jonathan Reed for a corner 3-point shot to try to send the game to double overtime. Reed fired in the 3-pointer, but after the final buzzer sounded.
Bonhomme, a sophomore from St. Martinville, La., sank 11 of 18 shots from the floor. The Stars' Dorion Gigger contributed eight points and six rebounds, while Reed and Evan White each had seven points and five rebounds.
"He had a very good day offensively," OCU coach Vinay Patel said of Bonhomme. "He asked me before the game, 'Coach what's your advice for someone who hasn't been hitting shots?' I told him, 'Keep shooting. If it goes in, you're doing everything right. You just have to keep playing hard, and it will fall for you.' A kid who puts in that effort on his game, good things will happen to people like that. We need him to step up more defensively. He's good now, but he can be even better.
Bonhomme knocked down a 3 for a 70-68 OCU edge with 2:01 left in regulation. Donovan hit a free throw to put the Stars up 71-68 with 53 seconds to go.
Rishaad Alexander from Southwestern Assemblies of God answered by sinking a 3-pointer at the 45-second mark. Both teams misfired on 3-point tries as the game went to overtime.
The Stars hit 6 of its 15 free-throw shots on the day. All five meetings in the all-time series between OCU and SAGU have been decided by five points or fewer.
"What a great basketball game that was," Patel said. "If I was a fan I probably would have enjoyed that a lot more. That was two really good teams going at it blow for blow. Give them all the credit, that was a big shot he hit at the very end. Free throws was the name of the game tonight. Tonight we shoot 40 percent from the line, and they shoot 80 percent."
The Stars play next against St. Gregory's at 8 p.m. Thursday in Shawnee, Okla.
