OCU appears in national rankings for first time in five years

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University won 25-20, 26-24, 25-15 over Texas Wesleyan on Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena in its first appearance as a top 25-ranked NAIA volleyball team since 2010.
The Stars rose to 23rd in the latest poll for their highest ranking ever, beating their No. 24 position in the Nov. 14, 2010 ratings. Oklahoma City improved to 10-3, 5-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference with the win.
Stefani Nell, a sophomore from Tulsa, Okla., supplied OCU with 13 kills and nine digs, while Tori Leisure posted 11 kills and four blocks. Leisure, a senior from Haslet, Texas, hit .550 while making 20 attacks without an error.
The Stars' Heather Watson, a senior from Edmond, Okla., notched her first career double-double with 33 assists and 10 digs, and Dani Chase, a sophomore from Yukon, Okla., piled up 23 digs. Manon Soraru, a sophomore from Mulhouse, France, topped OCU with seven blocks.
In the second set, Nell smacked a kill that brought the Stars set point at 24-20. Shelby Stinnett of Texas Wesleyan answered with a pair of kills before Carli Owens' kill evened the set 24-24. Leisure rejected Kristina Gafford's attack to sew up the set for OCU.
The Stars sealed the victory by rattling off a match-ending 12-0 run. Shekinah Clarke started the OCU splurge with a kill. Soraru chipped in a kill and teamed with Clarke twice on blocks, including on the final point of the match.
