OCU bests Wayland Baptist in four sets

Stars take first win over Wayland Baptist since 2010

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University upended Wayland Baptist (Texas) 16-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-20 on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Stefani Nell and Manon Soraru topped the Stars with 12 kills each. Oklahoma City moved to 9-3, 4-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, while Wayland Baptist, ranked 20th in NAIA volleyball, fell to 14-4, 4-1 in the SAC.
OCU notched its first victory over a rated opponent since a 21-25, 26-24, 24-26, 25-17, 15-10 win over then-20th-ranked Oklahoma Baptist on Oct. 23, 2014 in Oklahoma City. The Stars snapped an eight-match losing string to Wayland Baptist and posted its first win over the Pioneers since Nov. 13, 2010 in the SAC Tournament championship.
The Stars halted Wayland Baptist's regular-season SAC win streak at 16. Wayland Baptist suffered its last loss in league play Sept. 26, 2014 in four sets to John Brown (Ark.) in Siloam Springs, Ark.
"It was a big win for us," OCU coach Kyle Steele said. "For these seniors, it's the first time they've gotten a win over that school. I feel like we accomplish more and more stuff like that every match and every season I'm here. Top 20 team, big-time win, in nice fashion. Throughout the first set we were slow to start, but the next three sets we played really well."
Nell, a sophomore from Tulsa, Okla., added seven digs, while Soraru, a sophomore from Mulhouse, France, picked up three blocks. Jami-Rae Renwick, a senior from Emerald Park, Saskatchewan, Canada, posted nine kills and two blocks, while Tori Leisure, a senior from Haslet, Texas, recorded eight kills and seven blocks for the Stars.
"We had a lot of new faces step up," Steele said. "Stefani Nell was huge on the outside today. They couldn't stop her. Manon in the middle, they had no answer for her. She was big time. I couldn't complain about her performance at all. Shekinah played defense in the back row and gave great defense on the serve receive. Fia's three matches into playing a new position right now, and her swings are getting better. She had huge blocks and great serves. Dani Chase at libero was just solid today. She dug a lot of balls. It was overall a good team win."
Heather Watson, a senior from Edmond, Okla., amassed 29 assists, and Dani Chase, a sophomore from Yukon, Okla., supplied OCU with 15 digs.
"We had a really good mentality of 'next man up.' She came in and hit her locations," Steele said of Watson. "She set a really smart game and got the ball to the spots in the right times, and our hitters took care of the rest. Great job for her."
In the second set, OCU erased a 5-4 deficit with a 4-0 run. Nell hammered a kill followed by two Kenzie McMullen aces. Soraru put OCU on top 8-4 with a kill. Leisure nailed a kill and teamed with Fia Faa'agi on a block to trigger five unanswered points that gave the Stars a 17-8 advantage.
Nell had a pair of kills, and Faa'agi added an ace to provide OCU a 19-12 third-set lead.
OCU opened a 13-7 fourth-set lead using two Nell kills and Leisure's solo block. The Stars salted away the win as Leisure pounded a kill and had a pair of blocks.
The Stars take on Texas Wesleyan at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
