Stars narrowly drop match to Northwestern

OCU finishes 3-1 in Baker Invitational

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – Oklahoma City University took top 25-ranked Northwestern (Iowa) to the brink before falling 25-17, 24-26, 27-29, 25-23, 15-11 on Saturday evening at Collins Gymnasium in the Baker Invitational.
The Stars earned a 15-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-22 victory over Ottawa (Kan.) on Saturday morning. OCU moved to 4-3 in volleyball on the year and finished 3-1 in the Baker Invitational.
Northwestern, ranked 12th in the NAIA, recovered from falling behind two sets to one by taking the fourth and fifth sets. In the fifth, Hannah Barber's kill put Northwestern up 8-3.
OCU rallied as Manon Soraru hammered a kill that cut Northwestern's lead to 9-8. Northwestern answered with two Jessica Van Beek kills sandwiched around Lauryn Hilger's ace.
In the second frame, Jami-Rae Renwick socked a kill, then Heather Watson clinched the set with a service ace. In the third set, Soraru, a sophomore from Mulhouse, France, nailed a kill to put OCU ahead 28-27 to help in securing the set.
Hannah Mitcham provided the Stars with her first 50-assist performance since Sept. 30, 2013 against Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas). Mitcham, a senior from Fort Worth, Texas, posted 51 assists, nine digs and five kills for her third career match with 50 or more assists.
OCU's Stefani Nell, a sophomore from Tulsa, Okla., recorded 18 kills, 11 digs and two blocks, while Soraru added 15 kills and six blocks. Renwick, a senior from Emerald Park, Saskatchewan, Canada, knocked down 13 kills, and Shekinah Clarke, a freshman from Waianae, Hawaii, picked up six kills and a team-high 23 digs. Dani Chase picked up 21 digs.
Against Ottawa, Nell piled up 16 kills and 14 digs, and Renwick pounded 13 kills for OCU.
Tori Leisure, a senior from Haslet, Texas, supplied the Stars with 11 kills and three solo blocks, while Chase, a sophomore from Yukon, Okla., scooped up 17 digs. Mitcham compiled 46 assists, five digs and four kills.
OCU opens Sooner Athletic Conference play against John Brown (Ark.) at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Siloam Springs, Ark.
