OCU goes 1-1 to start 2015

Stars use 11 aces to bury Life Pacific

LA MIRADA, Calif. – Oklahoma City University notched its first victory of the season 25-13, 25-15, 25-12 over Life Pacific (Calif.) on Friday night at Richard Chase Gymnasium.
Westmont (Calif.) halted the Stars' winning streak in season-opening matches at six in a 20-25, 25-19, 26-24, 25-17 verdict. Westmont garnered votes in the preseason NAIA volleyball rankings.
The last time Oklahoma City fell in a season opener was Aug. 22, 2008 against Doane (Neb.) in Brownsville, Texas.
Against Westmont, Hannah Mitcham produced 43 assists and 13 digs for her 15th career 40-assist performance. Tori Leisure notched 15 kills and three blocks for the Stars.
OCU's Stefani Nell posted 14 kills, six digs and three blocks, while Jami-Rae Renwick hammered 14 kills. Dani Chase added 12 digs and six assists, and Lindsey Grace picked up 11 digs for Oklahoma City.
Westmont struck for the final eight points of the fourth and final set to clinch the match.
Against Life Pacific, Delainey Messenger pounded down a career-best seven kills to top OCU. Mitcham, a senior from Fort Worth, Texas, added 18 assists, three digs and two aces.
Renwick, Holly Randall and Manon Soraru each numbered five kills for the Stars. OCU piled up 11 aces as Faith Gerkin had four aces to go with six digs. Nell, a sophomore from Tulsa, Okla., chipped in a pair of aces.
Heather Watson compiled 12 assists and three digs, and Chase, a sophomore from Yukon, Okla., contributed nine digs for the Stars.
OCU meets Biola (Calif.), ranked second in the NAIA, at 12:30 p.m. CDT Saturday in La Mirada, Calif.
