OCU fends off Southwestern Christian 83-76

Stars meet Wayland Baptist at 6 p.m. Friday in SAC Tournament semifinals

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University pushed past the Sooner Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament quarterfinals with an 83-76 victory over Southwestern Christian on Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
R.J. McGhee, a senior from Baton Rouge, La., propelled Oklahoma City, ranked 23rd in the NAIA, with 28 points, six rebounds and four 3-pointers. The Stars (18-7) take on 13th-ranked Wayland Baptist (Texas) at 6 p.m. Friday at Abe Lemons Arena in the semifinals.
Tharone Chilton, a senior from Tulsa, Okla., posted 16 points, five rebounds and two assists, while Dema Sane, a senior from Mermoz, Senegal, totaled 11 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots for OCU.
Ivan Jelencic, a senior from Sibenik, Croatia, contributed 10 rebounds as the Stars built a 46-39 rebounding edge.
OCU rallied from five points down midway through the first half. The Stars erased a 36-34 halftime deficit to improve to 10-6 when trailing at the half this season.
"How great were our fans, talk about a sixth man," OCU coach Dionne Phelps said. "They were excellent. Because of their energy, we were able to pull off a very tough win against a very competitive ballclub."
The Stars pulled away from a 40-40 tie as Chilton hit a jumper. McGhee added a putback, while Sane's follow shot put OCU ahead 46-40 at 13:13 left.
McGhee and Evan White downed treys to push the Stars' advantage into double digits at 54-44 midway through the second period.
In the final 1:38, Jamil Donovan, Chilton, McGhee, Sane and White combined to hit 10 of 14 free throws to keep OCU in the lead. In the last 1:43, Southwestern Christian made it a two-possession game twice.
