OCU staves off John Brown 81-75

Stars to compete in SAC Tournament quarterfinals 6:15 p.m. Thursday

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University secured the second seed in the Sooner Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament with an 81-75 win over John Brown (Ark.) on Monday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Tharone Chilton, a senior from Tulsa, Okla., delivered 29 points, seven rebounds and two steals for the Stars. Oklahoma City, ranked 23rd in the NAIA, moved to 17-7, 13-5 in the SAC.
OCU will open 2015 postseason play 6:15 p.m. Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena. The Stars face the winner of the Oklahoma Baptist-Southwestern Christian tilt, which happens 5 p.m. Wednesday. Oklahoma City owns nine SAC Tournament championships.
The Stars' R.J. McGhee, a senior from Baton Rouge, La., produced 23 points, seven rebounds and two assists, while Ivan Jelencic, a senior from Sibenik, Croatia, compiled 12 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Evan White, a junior from San Antonio, chipped in 10 points for OCU.
Oklahoma City improved to 9-6 this season when trailing at halftime. OCU erased a 43-40 halftime deficit and rallied from nine points down. The Stars collected their fifth win in a row and 11th victory in their last 12 contests.
Matthew Ledford gave John Brown a 54-45 lead on a breakaway layup with 15:01 remaining in the game. Chilton sparked the Stars to tie the game 59-59 on a jumper with 10:40 left. Chilton scored 16 consecutive OCU points, including all of a 9-0 run that whittled away John Brown's lead to 54-53 at the 12:43 mark. White's trey put the Stars up 62-59 midway through the second period.
McGhee served as the closer with 13 of OCU's final 17 points of the game. When D.J. Feitl's 3 cut OCU's lead to 69-68 with 2:52 remaining, McGhee answered with four free throws and a lay-in to keep the Stars in front. OCU led 75-70 with 58 seconds left.
Ledford's putback sliced OCU's edge to 75-72, and Samson Olayemi had a 3-point play that cut his team's deficit to 77-75 with 24 seconds to go.
McGhee and White sank a pair of free throws each, while Jonathan Reed rejected Feitl's 3-point attempt in between to keep John Brown at bay.
