OCU vs. Concordia men's basketball preview

Stars start pursuit of seventh national championship

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University tips off play in the NAIA Division I Tournament against Concordia (Calif.).

ABOUT THE STARS: Oklahoma City was eliminated from the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament 77-62 by 11th-ranked Wayland Baptist (Texas) on March 6 at Abe Lemons Arena. The Stars (18-8) has gone 3-3 against ranked opponents this season.
R.J. McGhee, a 6-foot-6 senior from Baton Rouge, La., boosted OCU with 16 points while shooting 8-for-8 on free throws. McGhee supplies OCU with 16.4 points and 3.9 rebounds a game.
Lou Dunbar, a 6-3 redshirt freshman from Seabrook, Texas, chipped in eight points, two steals and two 3-pointers. Dunbar posts 3.7 points and 1.0 rebounds a game to go along with a 40 percent 3-point shooting percentage. Evan White, a 6-4 junior from San Antonio, had eight points, seven rebounds and two 3-pointers. White averages 7.0 points and 1.8 rebounds a game.

OCU stood at 23rd in the latest NAIA Division I rankings. Oklahoma City makes its 21st appearance in the NAIA Division I Tournament. OCU has won six national championships in 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996, 2007 and 2008 and reached the championship game in 2006.
The only other time OCU and Concordia have met each other was the 2007 NAIA Division I Tournament championship game. The Stars prevailed 79-71 on March 20, 2007 at Municipal Auditorium. Willie Irick had 17 points for OCU.
 
ABOUT THE EAGLES: Concordia fell in the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament championship to Hope International (Calif.) 75-61 on March 11 in Fullerton, Calif. Concordia (26-7) also dropped the conference tournament final in 2012, when the Eagles went on to capture the national title.
Ty Armstrong, a 6-9 senior, picked up 22 points and five rebounds. Armstrong powers Concordia with 17.3 points and 6.1 rebounds a game. Matt Scott, a 6-4 junior, had 12 points, four rebounds and two steals. Scott averages 11.2 points and 2.8 rebounds a game.
Concordia holds the ninth spot in the last set of national rankings. Concordia ranks sixth in the NAIA with a 3.88-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio.    
 
ABOUT THE COACHES: Dionne Phelps owns a record of 63-46 in his fourth season as OCU coach. He led the Stars to the SAC Tournament title and an NAIA Division I Tournament appearance in 2012-13. Phelps took over the Stars after serving as assistant coach for Oklahoma, which featured future No. 1 NBA Draft pick Blake Griffin during his tenure. Phelps has been a part of four conference title teams as well as three NCAA Tournament teams during his 24-year coaching career. Phelps played for Texas Lutheran, eventually joining the Bulldog Athletic Hall of Fame.
Ken Ammann has a 383-107 record in his 14th season guiding Concordia. Ammann is the four-time Golden State Athletic Conference coach of the year and two-time NAIA coach of the year. Ammann played for Stanford and scored 22 points in leading Stanford over Oklahoma to the NIT title.
