Stars derail Southwestern Christian 75-63

OCU earns sixth consecutive victory

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University picked up a 75-63 win over Southwestern Christian on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Tharone Chilton, a senior from Tulsa, Okla., supplied OCU with 21 points and four rebounds. The Stars ran its winning streak to six games while improving to 12-6, 8-4 in Sooner Athletic Conference men's basketball.
Gary Inglett, a senior from Ardmore, Okla., recorded 15 points and nine rebounds, and R.J. McGhee, a senior from Baton Rouge, La., posted 13 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals for OCU.
Oklahoma City and Wayland Baptist (Texas) finished the day tied for second place in the SAC standings at one game behind league-leading Mid-America Christian. The Stars face Wayland Baptist, ranked 21st in the NAIA, at 8 p.m. Thursday in Plainview, Texas.
"You got to try to build up your resume'," OCU coach Dionne Phelps said of his team's push for the postseason. "Everything you need to succeed at the national tournament, Wayland Baptist has. Everybody has to make their turn."
Southwestern Christian snatched 15 offensive rebounds and gained a 15-5 advantage in second-chance points.
The Stars went on a 7-0 surge to create a 30-17 advantage. McGhee hit a 3 in transition and a jumper in the lane to key the OCU run. Ivan Jelencic added a lay-in off McGhee's assist with 4:46 left in the first half.
Southwestern Christian rallied to take the lead 46-45 on Tyler Turner's trey with 14:27 to go. Chilton answered with a game-tying free throw, then McGhee scored on a lay-in. Chilton's free throws put OCU up 50-46 at the 11:44 mark.
OCU used a 10-2 splurge to go up 60-50. Chilton ignited the run with a layup. McGhee added a layup and two free throws, and Inglett's foul shots put the Stars up 10 points with 7:27 remaining.
Dorion Gigger threw down a two-handed dunk off Jamil Donovan's setup to provide OCU a 72-61 lead with 1:32 showing.
