PLAINVIEW, Texas – Wayland Baptist (Texas) knocked off Oklahoma City University 98-71 on Thursday at the Hutcherson Center in a matchup of top 25-ranked squads in NAIA men's basketball.
OCU's win streak came to an end after six consecutive victories. No. 18-ranked Wayland Baptist improved to 20-4, 9-4 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, while the 23rd-ranked Stars fell to 12-7, 8-5 in the SAC.
Gary Inglett, a senior from Ardmore, Okla., supplied Oklahoma City with 14 points, eight rebounds and two steals, and Tharone Chilton, a senior from Tulsa, Okla., picked up 13 points and three rebounds. Ivan Jelencic, a senior from Sibenik, Croatia, accrued 11 points and equaled his season best with eight rebounds for OCU.
Wayland Baptist scored the most of any OCU opponent this season. The Pioneers led the entire game as the Stars managed one tie after Chilton nailed a 3-pointer to knot the score 5-5. Wayland Baptist built an early 24-5 advantage as the Stars shot 2-for-14 from the field in the early going.
The Pioneers grew their lead to 32 points late in the first half.
OCU had won the other meeting this season 93-89 on Dec. 6 in Oklahoma City. Oklahoma City dropped to 2-2 against ranked teams this season.
The Stars take on Oklahoma Baptist at 5 p.m. Saturday in Shawnee, Okla.
