OCU vs. Southwestern Christian women's basketball preview

Stars look for 17th consecutive win

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University looks to extend its Sooner Athletic Conference winning streak to 17 games and its home win string to 20 against Southwestern Christian.

ABOUT THE STARS: Oklahoma City posted an 84-66 romp of Mid-America Christian on Thursday at Gaulke Activity Center. The Stars (16-1, 11-0 SAC) compiled a 46-27 rebounding advantage after Mid-America grabbed 47 rebounds Jan. 10 for the highest rebounding total by an OCU opponent this season.
Rateska Brown, a 5-foot-6 senior from Alvin, S.C., rang up 18 points, three rebounds and two assists at Mid-America Christian. Brown totals 20.4 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.24 steals per game. She ranks seventh in NAIA Division I in scoring and 3-pointers made (62) and second in 3s a game (3.65).
Marisha Wallace, a 6-2 senior from Midwest City, Okla., supplied OCU with 14 points and seven rebounds in 17 minutes on the floor. Wallace adds 13.3 points, 7.6 rebounds and 1.10 steals a game. Janay Borum, a 5-2 senior from Upper Marlsboro, Md., had 12 points, five rebounds, 14 assists and three thefts. She notched her fifth double-digit performance in assists this season. Borum averages 8.1 points, 2.8 rebounds, 7.4 assists and 2.88 steals a game while leading the NAIA in assists average.

Oklahoma City sat at No. 2 in the latest edition of the NAIA Division I rankings. OCU has been ranked in the top 10 in every poll since March 11, 2009 and made the top 25 in all 185 polls since 1999-2000. OCU owns national championships from 1988, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2012, 2014. SAC coaches predicted the Stars would win the league title. OCU has won or shared the SAC regular-season crown 15 times, including the last five in a row.
OCU has a 4-0 all-time record against Southwestern Christian. Oklahoma City routed Southwestern Christian 89-56 on Jan. 15 in Bethany, Okla. Yvonte Neal piled up 27 points and seven 3-pointers.

ABOUT THE LADY EAGLES: Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) nipped Southwestern Christian 68-65 on Thursday in Waxahachie, Texas. Southwestern Christian (10-13, 6-5 SAC) saw its win streak end at five games.
Kim Hayes, a 5-9 senior, recorded 20 points, nine rebounds and four 3-pointers. Hayes contributes 9.3 points and 3.9 rebounds a contest. Grace Hadley, a 5-9 freshman, had 18 points, eight rebounds and three treys. She averages 9.9 points and 3.9 rebounds this season.
SAC coaches forecasted the Lady Eagles to take eighth in the league.

ABOUT THE COACHES: Latricia Trammell was the 2014 NAIA Division I Phyllis Holmes coach of the year. Trammell has a 71-9 record in her third season as OCU head coach. She guided the Stars to a 16-0 record in conference play in 2012-13. She was OCU assistant to Rob Edmisson in 2005-07, then became Western State (Colo.) head coach from 2007-12. Trammell's college head-coaching record is 136-85 in her eighth year. Trammell has coached six all-Americans and 23 all-conference selections, including two SAC players of the year, an SAC newcomer of the year, Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference player of the year and RMAC West Division freshman of the year. As an assistant at OCU, Trammell mentored the Stars' first WNBA draftee, Mariam Sy of the Washington Mystics, 10 all-conference choices, the SAC player of the year, SAC newcomer of the year and four all-Americans.
Darrick Matthews enters his first season at the helm of the Lady Eagles. Matthews spent the previous two seasons as an assistant under Southwestern Christian men's basketball coach Quinn Wooldridge. Matthews played collegiately at Oklahoma Christian, University of the Southwest (N.M.) and McMurry (Texas).
