OCU pulls out 72-67 win over Mid-America Christian

Inglett keys Stars with six free throws in last 12 seconds of game

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University topped Mid-America Christian 72-67 on Thursday at the Gaulke Activity Center.
Gary Inglett, a senior from Ardmore, Okla., powered OCU to the victory over Mid-America Christian, ranked 14th in NAIA Division I men's basketball, with 25 points, 13 rebounds and three assists. The Stars improved to 11-6, 7-4 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Oklahoma City kept pace in the league race as OCU, St. Gregory's, Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) and Wayland Baptist (Texas) all stand at a game back of front-running Mid-America Christian in the SAC standings.
"Very intense game," Oklahoma City coach Dionne Phelps said. "MACU is playing at such a high level of basketball. We had to try to come in and match it. I thought in the first half, they went to a different level, and we didn't match it. I thought in the second half, our guys came back, and they responded. It tells in the rebounding situation – we tied them 41-41. This MACU team is exceptional at getting offensive rebounds and rebounding and playing tough. This was a good victory for us."
Inglett nailed all six of his free throws in the final 12.5 seconds as OCU hung onto the lead. Inglett added a pair of free throws with 6.39 seconds to go for the final margin. Inglett put the exclamation point on the victory by blocking Semar Farris' 3-point attempt with three seconds left.
"It sounds like it's becoming a repeated thing every game, but as you know, for us to be successful, he has to play well," Phelps said of Inglett. "I thought our whole team did a great job coming together and helping out on rebounds. Dema Sane has been out for a little bit, but I thought he had a really big rebound. Hats off to our bench."
R.J. McGhee provided the Stars a 66-65 edge on a drive to the basket and a layup with 29 seconds showing. Jerrick Massenburge put Mid-America in front 65-64 by hitting a free throw with 57 seconds remaining.
Inglett posted his eighth double-double this season to maintain his perch atop the SAC in that category. Inglett sank 8 of his 10 field-goal attempts and shot 8-for-10 from the free-throw line. McGhee, a senior from Baton Rouge, La., tallied 14 points for the Stars.
Tharone Chilton, a senior from Tulsa, Okla., totaled 11 points and six assists, and Jelencic, a senior from Sibenik, Croatia, chipped in 10 points and six rebounds for Oklahoma City.
OCU roared to an 18-4 lead as Inglett scored in transition with 13:37 to go in the first half. Oklahoma City hit 8 of its first 12 shots from the floor, while Mid-America Christian shot 2-for-12 from the field to that point.
Mid-America missed its first six shots from the field as OCU scored the game's first seven points. Ivan Jelencic put the Stars in front 7-0 by scoring off Inglett's pass.
The Evangels rallied with a 10-0 run that cut their deficit to 20-17 midway through the first period. Mid-America had a two-point lead early in the second half.
OCU's 9-2 run pushed its lead into double digits at 54-44 with 12:44 to go. Chilton's basket and 3-pointer gave OCU a 52-44 advantage, then Inglett added a bucket.
McGhee jumpers put the Stars up 12 twice, the second time at 60-48 with 7:40 left. Mid-America snatched the lead with an 11-0 run finished by Massenburge's free throw within the final minute.
The Stars meet Southwestern Christian at 3 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
