OCU at Mid-America Christian women’s basketball preview

Stars have 15-game winning streak

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University, riding a 15-game winning streak, continues Sooner Athletic Conference play against Mid-America Christian on Thursday.
 
ABOUT THE STARS: OCU toppled Texas Wesleyan 84-77 on Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena. The Stars (15-1, 10-0) dominated bench points 41-5 against TWU.
Rateska Brown, a 5-foot-6 senior from Alvin, S.C., led the Stars with 21 points, six rebounds and two rebounds sinking three 3-pointers. Brown leads the team averaging 20.5 points and adds 5.0 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game.
Marisha Wallace, a 6-2 senior from Midwest City, Okla., dropped 16 points and nine rebounds off the bench for OCU. Wallace contributes 13.2 points and 7.7 rebounds while appearing in nine games. Ouleymatou Coulibaly, a 6-2 senior from Bamako, Mali, West Africa, combined for her sixth double-double with 13 points, 18 rebounds and three steals. Coulibaly nearly averages a double-double with 16.3 points and 9.5 rebounds a game for the Stars.

Oklahoma City remained at No. 2 in the newest NAIA Division I rankings. OCU has been ranked in the top 10 in every poll since March 11, 2009 and made the top 25 in all 185 polls since 1999-2000. OCU owns national championships from 1988, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2012, 2014. SAC coaches predicted the Stars would win the league title. OCU has won or shared the SAC regular-season crown 15 times, including the last five in a row.
OCU controls the all-time series against Mid-America Christian 16-0. The Stars smashed MACU 80-66 on Jan. 10 at Abe Lemons Arena. Coulibaly recorded her third double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds in that game.
 
ABOUT THE LADY EVANGELS: Mid-America Christian squeaked by Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) 72-68 on Saturday in Waxahachie, Texas. Lindsey Mann of Mid-America (13-6, 6-4 SAC) hit free throws with five seconds left for the final margin.
Alexia Kelley, a 6-2 senior from Dallas, led MACU with 18 points and eight rebounds. Kelley leads the team in rebounds with 10.7 and 2.2 respectively while adding 12.7 points a game. Felicia Foster, a 5-2 junior, contributed 13 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Foster averages 8.8 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.4 assists a game. Ashlee Ferguson, a 5-6 senior, leads the Lady Evangels in points with 16.2 a game while pulling down 3.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game.
SAC coaches expected Mid-America to take fifth place in the league before the season.
 
ABOUT THE COACHES: Latricia Trammell was the 2014 NAIA Division I Phyllis Holmes coach of the year. Trammell has a 68-9 record in her third season as OCU head coach. She guided the Stars to a 16-0 record in conference play in 2012-13. She was OCU assistant to Rob Edmisson in 2005-07, then became Western State (Colo.) head coach from 2007-12. Trammell's college head-coaching record is 133-85 in her eighth year. Trammell has coached six all-Americans and 23 all-conference selections, including two SAC players of the year, an SAC newcomer of the year, Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference player of the year and RMAC West Division freshman of the year. As an assistant at OCU, Trammell mentored the Stars' first WNBA draftee, Mariam Sy of the Washington Mystics, 10 all-conference choices, the SAC player of the year, SAC newcomer of the year and four all-Americans.
Marcus Moeller holds a 31-19 record in his second season at the helm of the Lady Evangels. Moeller served as assistant coach at Mid-America Christian to Roman Owen each of the past two seasons before taking over as head coach. Prior to joining the coaching staff at Mid-America Christian, he spent three seasons as an assistant at Missouri Southern State.
